I think that depends on the voter and the interpretation of the photographer. Changing banana to pear may be totally appropriate. Anyhow, you won't get disqualified, so as with any challenge, the "DNMC" is up to the discretion of the voter.
I think this was not thought out very well. How do you reference the photo you are inspired by? Must your caption include the challenge name? Will those photographers who don't provide a clear "link" be at a disadvantage? There is no way to provide a link for the voter. So with over 800 challenges and therefore 800 possible last-place photos to choose from, is it up to the voter to find the original?

I think you just put the title of the challenge in the title, so CityLights II, then you can just look at the challenge and the brown and you have it

Yes, I think that makes sense, thanks. I'm just concerned for those who might not think to do this (the photographers who never visit the forums, for example). Oh, well. :-/ |

This is loads of fun but I think the voting will be tedious unless site admin adds a place to add the photo number of the orig brown ribbon winner. It would be cool if both pics could appear on the screen side by side. |

Yes, I found it the same ("tedious") with the last Deja Vu challenge. I think I quit voting in that one! I think the site leaders are too busy to do much coding, so the chances they'll do a coding change for one challenge seems unlikely. Still, it would be great to at least have an easy link to the original brown-ribboner. :-)

Don't confuse the site "leaders" with the "administrator(s)". The leaders are the site council - unpaid volunteers. The administrators own the business. This is a challenge for members - thats the group who pays the fee. To ask for what I would guess is not more than a few hours of code to make the process go so much easier and better for hundreds of us is not unreasonable. And once the code is written it can be used again for similar challenges |

Right. Administrators, then. :-)

One solution would be for all entries to include the image number of the brown ribbon being reshot in the title. I know it won't be easy to click on, and makes the voting process a LOT longer, but it's better than nothing and doesn't require any coding effort...

Its a brown ribbon or am I missing something.
There is only ONE brown ribbon per challenge??
One ribbon, one title of the challenge

I've compiled a PDF of all challenges and the browns in them. About 2.5M. You can get it here:
Browns for Challenges 2 - 808
Note: these are all slightly enlarged thumbnails, so the quality isn't so great. If you want more detail on a particular image you'll have to go find it, but that should be pretty easy.
Note 2: these images are not censored/screened in any way, there *may* be some nudity in some images.
Note 3: these are all copyrighted by their original owners and I assume no responsibility for accuracy or anything like that.

About 90 minutes actually - wasn't this supposed to be a programming challenge? :-) |

The voting end is going to suck unless the administrator steps up to the plate |

SO if I choose to reproduce a Tryptich, or other "multi-image composition", will it be legal?

That's awesome. Well done. Believe it or not, I worked on a compilation to share -- for about an hour last night. I quit when I realized at 800+ images I would be done about the time the challenge ended! |

so i'm looking through the previous browns, and i'm a bit confused.
a lot of the browns were actually attained by DNMC, but the photo itself wasn't half bad (case in point:
)
now in this case, if we reshoot the photo and make it technically and compositionally better, but it still doesn't meet the original challenge, does that count? or is that a DNMC?

your photo meet the challenge if it reproduce, or better nearly repruduce, a brown ribbon. |

Having browsed through, it would say that most of the browns were way more than DNMC |

I was just thinking,.....
The person who comes in last in this challenge will really have accomplished something.
The Uber-Brown. |

Yeah I was wondering about this. Do you just butcher a blue ribbon winner instead or just ignore everything and take a picture while throwing your camera in the air and hoping you left your lens cap on?

Focusing is for wimps. Composition? Who needs it. White Balance? That's so overrated... |
