That is a goofy title. :P

So here is a photo of I took of my screen and did some levels to exaggerate it abit. Its really annoying. I have wiped my monitor clean and if I have it turned off and look at it the spots can not be seen. I notice it the most in photoshop, but oddly enough not really when I have open DPC. Some images I notice more than other, particularly darker ones. it looks splotchy and I have to move images in CS2 to make sure the marks aren't noise. I can't afford a new monitor, so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of maybe how to clean it, maybe its some kind of residue? I don't remember them being there and they seem to have become more of them and more prevalent. In my new place for about 45 minutes a day the monitor gets direct sunlight. Could this be part of the problem? Any advice would be great.

I doubt the sunlight causes it but an LCD monitor should never be exposed to direct sunlight. How old is this monitor? Is it under warranty? How do you clean this screen? Do you have small children that can reach the monitor? It really looks like someone has pressed very hard on the screen.

One non-professional answer I found said, "thats a manufacturing defect. there is a plastic cover over the actual LCD monitor part to protect it. Think of it like a framed picture - the smudge is probably a fingerprint smudge on the inside of the glass. You should locate the brand of your monitor (LG, Dell, etc) and call the customer service to get it replaced." Another refers to the "outer filter screen", so I guess that's what he means.

Lol, another said you have to clean the screen before the smudges swim behind it.
Or quit looking at dirty pages :)

Sorry, this thread doesn't help, but it's funny!

Hope you solve the problem.

No kids, there could be a cat involved but I don't think so.
I don't know about the warranty. Its a couple years old I'll have to find out.
Do you think there is a cleaner I could try?
[thumb]647404[/thumb]Randomly I can't see it when DPC is open. I tried to bring it out like before, but doesn't show up.
Must sleep, I'll check back in the morning.

Just a thought, at my old place we had house cleaners that came by every two weeks. They would clean the desk area too, wiping down all the surfaces. Is it possible if they were using household cleaners and did some wipes on the monitor it could have done something?

I use warm soapy water soaked into toilet paper.
The softer the paper the better. You don't want
to scratch the plastic. I also dry with toilet
paper. I never clean the screen unless it's really
really dirty. (I have to do the same trick you do in
CS2, moving the windows to see if it's noise/dirt or
dirty screen. heheheh)

The fact your's is coming and going is troublesome. Try
this monitor on another computer. Or try a different
video card if you have one. Also check all your cable
connections to the monitor and video card. I had a monitor lose the red gun one time because of a funky
pin.

Oh, and yes if the cleaners used a powerful cleaner it could have easily damaged the plastic screen. But....
you should be able to see this even with the monitor turned off. You might have to tilt it and catch the
light just right to see it.

Good luck.

Thanks Walt, I 'll try some more cleaning and check the connections. But I kind of starting to think its the screen itself as its not consistent, only show up with a darker background. A little bump for those who aren't up in the middle of the night when I wrote this. :)

Hope this works out for you, but I wanted to point out a thread from a year ago, when my LCD monitor started leaking. You couldn't see the problem unless the monitor was on and there was a dark or gray background, but it looked like this:

Good luck.

I use kitchen towels as opposed to toilet paper, which tends to break up and leave fibres all over the screen.

It also depends on the manufacturer, as some have three year warranty.

thats a bummer. will check the warranty stuff, I think its in storage somewhere at my parents house. Its two years old atleast, can't remember if we got the extended coverage. I hope so. If not I'll have to live with it for awhile unless it gets worse. :-/
