What program did you use to burn the files?

I recently did the same thing but from the opposite direction, drag & drop in Vista and could not read on XP & earlier operating systems. The fix was to change during the Vista wizard, how the blank disc was formatted, not chosisng the second of the two options. By default, Windows burns discs in the Live File System format, but you can also choose to burn discs in the Mastered format (2nd one). As soon as I chose the 2nd option during the wizard, I was able to burn the DVD and have it readable on older machines.
My suggestion would be to re-burn the CD/DVD watching carefully what disc formatting process is used in XP.

Did you close the CD session before trying to open the files with the other OS?

had this happen with my brothers cd burner and my cd burner. for some reason the burning coded/firmware/driver whatever you wanna call it had an option to burn cd's that would work only on specific cd drive brands with some reading thing enabled. made me waste a ton of cd's till i realized the problem, i cant member how to fix it but there should be a way to turn it off.

That's a great question to ask! Also wondering if the CD/DVD was ejected on it's own, indicating it had finished, vs. "thinking" it was and opening the tray manually.

*whistles, walking away, pretending to have never done that myself*
