Alice said "Oddly enough, I think this very nice image would be better with more or none of that white fence. While the juxtaposition does show contrasts and changes, the fancy fence seems to be the eye-catcher here. (just my opinion of course)"
So I played around. I could not add any more of the white fence on the left as I had not done any cropping on that side of the original image. I don't know why I didn't capture more of it when I took the picture. I'd like to think something was in the way, but likely I just didn't think of it. Now I know better - get more variety in the images and then decide what to do with it.
So I decided to try the other alternative and cut out the fence. I had thought about that when I prepared the original image, but didn't like the road headed off to the left in the image. So I cropped out the fence, cloned out the road, and then cloned out the chain link fence on the right that was now more obvious in the larger image. I'm don't think I like the white house in the background that stands out a bit more, but that was harder to deal with.
So you can all judge which is the better image.
Original or the revised
Edited to add the following
Once started I decided to play around some more with the image. This time I cloned out the tree on the left, The white fence, a small barn, a piece of farm equipment, and the chain link fence. I think I prefer this one. The horizontal orientation it what make it better for me.

I'm so glad that you are enjoying this "challenge" and I look forward to seeing all the barns that you can capture. The number can certainly be adjusted as we go! I actually found a few more barks that I captured a couple of weeks ago..these projects really should just go until we can't find any more subjects :) I would like to see a collage after 30 images though because I can't wait to see them all together!

If in the mean time you want to see them at a group you can head over to my portfolio here. I have all the barn images in a folder. or you can go over to the page in my photo blog where I have set that will end up in the collage all on the same page.

I added this barn to the collection since it was of a different and perhaps more modern design than most of the barns I have added up to this point.

I went out of town on a work trip earlier this week and driving around found a few really neat churches. Here they are:

Thanks! I enjoyed looking at them all on one page. The version on your web site is especially nice with the formatted dates and structure. Very nice! |

I thought it was kinda funny that I found a "Red Lick" Baptist church and a Redbone Baptist church....This one (Red Lick) is located in Red Lick, MS. I included the sign for a little bit of history.

I found these two barns off the road a ways. I had to use the zoom and stand in the car door to get high enough to see over the grasses and brush along the side of the road. Both barns are in a clear state of disrepair.

This barn was just down the road a bit from the two I posted the image of yesterday. I'm not sure which of the tree barns is in worst shape.

Interesting observation! I'm not sure why there are two doors. Here is a crop of the shot. I hadn't noticed the light over the right side door...it does seem strange!

Perhaps it dates back to the black/white racial issues. One door was for Blacks, the other for Whites. Such things existed.

When I googled Redlick Presbyterian Church, I came up with this story and image.
While it has nothing to do, I guess, with the church Jason has pictured,
it does have two doors. Maybe it's a Presbyterian thing?
Edited to say:Oh, wait. I see, the church Jason has is of a baptist variety in the same, or nearby,
community. Yep, we're back to the racial hypothesis ...

Very interesting Alice! As far as the racial hypothesis for the two doors you can rule that out because blacks and whites don't worship together in the same church in the south. There are black churches and there are white churches..... |

These two barns are just down the road from where I live and are still in use - just not for drying tobacco any longer. When I first moved to the area the field in front of these barns was filled with tobacco every summer. But times have changed.

There are at least four barns on this farm. This one looks to be in the worst shape.
This is image number 26. Only four more to go.

I pass this barn every day on the way back and forth to work. I'm not sure if the sides have just fallen into disrepair of if the farmer is working on the barn. While this is a true tobacco barn I have not seen tobacco grown on this farm for the twenty five years I have lived in the area. He has mostly grown nothing but corn. He used to sell sweet corn every summer at at little stand on the side of the road. And back then he must have been in his 80s. One of my vivid memories of him was one summer day when it was in the 90s - nice and hot and humid. This fellow drives up to buy some of the corn and tells the farmer "It sure is hot today." The farmers reply, without missing a beat was "It's summer, it's supposed to hot."
So here are two images of the same barn. One a closeup and one that shows a bit more of the farm.

This small barn is on the same farm as the last two images I have posted. It is the smallest of the four barns located on that farm. It is located back away from the road on the far edge of the field.

This is the fourth of the barns on the one farm. It seems to be in the best shape of all of them.
This is the 29 image in the series. I was out today getting images of three more barns. And I know of another dozen or so nearby that I can add to the list. But I am going to take a break after I post the 30th image and put together the collage of the first thirty. Then I may try to do another batch. But this time I will take it slower.

Awesome Larry! I gotta get busy commenting and processing! I've taken several church shots in the last few days, but haven't been in the mood to process them...Maybe I'll work on them tonight. |

This is the last barn in the set for my Old Barns of Southern Maryland project. I hope everyone has enjoyed seeing all of these barns. Sometime in the near future I will put together a collage of the thirty images in the set.
There are still many other barns out there in the area. So at a slower pace I will be capturing more images. I will post them here, and if this thread seems to die I will also be posting them at my photo blog. The full set of images is on one page there now. Once I do get started on the second set I put up a new page for those. So far I have about another dozen barns I want to get to, and I'm sure when I go looking I'll find even more.
Edited to correct a sloppy cut and paste job.
