and other accessories?
I am looking around online. There are so many different places.
I am looking for the D200, and I was thinking of going to B & H online and getting a used one from them (a 9+).
But with NYIP I also get a student discount at Ritz camera, but havent gotten my code yet.
I am not buying for another few weeks, so I want to do plenty of research.
Thanks
eta: would you buy a camera from ebay?? or lens?

I have purchased many items, lenses and bodies included, from B&H as well as Ritz and can vouch for them both. Good service either way. |

Missed this one. The answer is yes and I have purchased both on E-Bay. But be careful and do your homework. |

B&H definitely has the best rep amongst DPCers but there are other good places too. I've done a bit of business with Porters in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Don't neglect your local brick and mortar store too. It's nice to be able to stop by and chat with the experts from time to time. Gotta keep those guys in business. |

I bought a second hand camera (a backup Canon 30D) off ebay and it came with three lenses, extra battery and cf card. It was a really good value purchase for me. I guess you always take a risk buying unseen and just going by the description. I always check the sellers record and if buying 2nd hand I ask questions like, why are you selling your camera, how many shots has it taken, etc, makes you sound very professional if you ask. Ebay has ways of protecting your purchase by going through PayPal etc. Do your homework and use secure ways of paying. Always check the postage and handling fees as a good buy can turn out to be a bad one if these fees are excessive. Once saw an item for an unbelievable $2.00 but then found the postage etc was $148.00!! |

B&H is top of my list primarily because I know it will have what I want in stock; the prices are not the best at B&H though and if you shop around you can save a bit of money.
As for eBay- i've bought a camera and a lens from eBay without a hitch, but be sure to check the feedback thoroughly as there is a lot of scamming going on in the camera section.
Another place is 47th Street Photo in NYC, they have great prices. |

BHPHOTO

I've bought a P&S and my Pentax at buydig.com and had no issues. Buydig is the internet arm of Beach Camera and has pretty good reseller ratings.

Believe it or not, check out Dell- as in the computer people. Their gear selection is greatly improved and they do sometimes run deals. Too late but I had a coupon for 20% off any digital camera a couple of weeks ago (one time use coupon I got in an email). They had ten percent off at the time. Looks like that is over now too. The coupon brought the total discount to 20%. I did buy my Sigma 10- 20mm from them. BH is my first choice though.

I buy a lot of my gear from Beach Camera out of New York, but use B&H & Calumet as well.. Depends on the price point, and availability of the particular item I want. Just bouht a Nikon 50mm 1.8 from Calumet for 114.00 and free shipping.. The free shipping did it for me! |

i have used both B&H and Beach Camera. Both have been really great for me. Super fast shipping and with beach camera I needed to return a 70-200mm 2.8 IS Lens (do to a scatch on an inner lens) and their return team worked with me to get it done and it was done no questions asked. I would definately buy from both places again.

I have purchased 3 lenses from B&H never had any problems. Good service and fast delivery.
As for Lighting I have ordered alot of light gear from Alien Bee's which I think has the best customer service in the business.
Another company I like to deal with is Full Compass. Although they focus more on Music and Recording they do carry a large line of camera and video equipment. The main reason I like to deal with them when I can is because their main warehouse with store is only a half hour from my house. I can pick up my orders and save alot on shipping.
ETA: linked to full compass

another on-line forum to pick-up equipment is Fred Miranda. They have a very active buy and sell forum, which includes a feedback thread. If you find someone there who has good feedback, then you are reasonably safe. (they will root out bad apples and skewer them on-line!) Prices are usually very fair, and there's a lot of traffic there. I've bought and sold some relatively big ticket items there and all the transactions went smoothly. |

I've bought my 30D, 70-200IS, 580II and lots of other goodies from Amazon and had them the next day. Just stick to Amazon-only, not one of their 3rd party vendors (except maybe Adorama) and you'll do fine. Not sure where you are, but if you're near Los Angeles, Samys Camera is good and the staff is very helpful, although they mark up the price a little bit from their web prices (which are comparable to B+H). I bought my first dslr, 3 lenses, 580ex and a bunch of other stuff from them. B+H is also very good, I've ordered some things from them as well. |

Sometimes Ritz Camera or J&R will have really good prices on specific items, especially the popular ones. J&R isn't really a camera store, so I wouldn't use them as a source of information, but they're a reputable dealer, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy something from them.
I've gotten my best deals on craigslist though. Much more fun than ebay, because I can hold things in my hand before I buy, and get it now instead of waiting for the seller to ship. Craigslist, of course, only really works if you're in a large city. |
