I found a great antivirus program about 4 years ago. I have used it for hours almost everyday on line, and so far not a single glitch. It's called Mac OSX. ; )

My god, that's got to be a record. It took 24 posts for this to happen!

Norton - bleh! That is one of the first things to be removed off a computer of mine.
Avast is flawless, free, and only requires a yearly registration with them.

Personally I really love SonicWall.

I get rid of Norton!! I hate it and everything associated with it. I use AVG Free and Windows Firewall. No problems, no viruses or colds or Flu!

I still reckon Norton breeds viruses just to make you use it!

AVG all the way plus Outpost firewall.

No problems with either.

I hate Norton.

I love it when people will stake their computer and everything they have on it on a program that is free. Those that are free have nothing to lose if their program mises a few viruses, trojan horses, a spamware or two or any number of mean little critters that are looking for ways to get into your computer. Why should they care if people get their computers and everything they cherish blown away or taken over by zombies... after all, there are a lot of people out there that will continue to use their free software just because it is free. Not me. I've been using Norton's for a number of years on my half dozen computers at home and all of my computers and systems where I work. It works. I've also used McAfee and Trend Micro's programs. They work also. Each has different pro's and cons... but if they don't do their job, they will be out of business as the word gets around. Panda is another freebie that some people swore by... until the word started getting out that the reason Panda was so good was because it was finding viruses in plain text files... and even empty files. For those that don't know viruses, you can't have a virus in a plain text file or an empty file. But Panda found them there. They were making themselves look good by coming up with lots of false detects. Which is only slightly not so bad as missing them completely.

If the freebies only took out the people that used them because they were free, pretty soon the virtual gene pool would be clean... but people that use these cheap freebies, or even worse, nothing at all, just provide the breeding ground that's just waiting to hatch out all these little nasty things so they can head out into the internet.

And the worst part of it is... you won't even be able to get pictures of it to show the rest of us when it happens. ;)

Well, I've been using Norton ever since I first went online, what, 15 years ago? Whatever... And I have never had a complaint, never been infected with a virus, never nada..

So to shift this in another direction, now that FF is back, are y'all saying I have FREE and BETTER protection available?

Sound off...

I think there is some bias here! I used to use Norton and had more viruses than I do now! So free is cheap? I am cheap and I have a laptop and a desktop that are virus free! What's your point? Should we shell out $$$ for Norton? Or carry on as we are?

Elitism is creeping in here, my system is better than yours! Not true, I am quite happy with AVG, as I have been for the past few years. You pay your money and get the same as I and many other get for free. You stick with Norton Virus Suite:))

I had my previous system get massively infected while being protected by Norton. It couldn't clean the system either. Free AVG came to the rescue and fixed the issues.

AVG gets paid customers by having a free product that works.

Norton gets customers by bundling, name recognition, and living off of past success. Norton used to be creme of the crop....

I'll also add my opinion that Norton must go. The performance increase you get off of getting rid of that thing is amazing. With that said, AVG's performance for me has been absolutely flawless. I have never once had a virus in the past 6 years that I've been using it. Another few free products that work great are Spyboy Search and Destroy and Spyware Blaster. Use those two and AVG and your computer won't have a problem.

Computer was never "off"; just the browser was non-functional, but IE was working all along. I just hate IE, is all...

I am absolutely with you on this one Brad... and the sad thing about Norton's is that on some occasions uninstalling it does NOT eradicate all of your problems. I removed mine quite a while ago and was still experiencing problems and found out that the only sure way to remove Norton was to delete any reference to it from your Directory.

I have no idea what you mean about elitisum... what I'm saying is that you get what you pay for and if free makes you feel safe, go for it. But programmers that put out free stuff have very little incentive to be concerned about their product and how well it works. That doesn't mean as an individual they don't care, just that they have no business reason to be all that concerned. I've used a lot of free stuff on my computers over the last 25+ years I've been running computers. But I don't run free when comes to protecting my computers and my data on them. I ran McAfee when it was free back in the early days. But that was a long time ago and a whole lot of viruses ago. The freebies are better than nothing, but it's not good enough for me. And as I said, if it only affected the individuals that ran stuff like this, it wouldn't be any big deal. But it doesn't affect just you. If you get infected and are on any kind of network, you could be a breeder and carrier and not even know it. And as more and more people get on dedicated broadband networks, it's going to get worse.

I have also noticed firefox 2.0.0.12 i think is the newest update is having problems, vista in particular. Upon goggling it i have noticed several other people with problems. The main problem i had was firefox would crash, for no reason, just searching or listening to music and it will have the error popup saying it crashed and restart. I uninstalled and installed the older version of firefox 2.0.0.0. it seems to be working fine.
