I was playing Yahoo Games and Yahoo booted me, I had to reboot. Upon reboot Firefox "installed updates". Now when I try to use Firefox it says it can't establish a connection. I can access mozilla.org through IE, but Firefox is not connecting to the web.
Anyone else having this problem? Suggestions?

Hmph. A couple of our computers did an automatic FF update last night, but I haven't encountered any problems as a result of it. |

Even did a complete reinstall of FF, same problem. Message I am getting is this:
Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.dpchallenge.com.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

File -> Work offline?
Or, disable add-ons and if it works enable them one by one to find which caused the problem.

Very temporarily turn off Windows firewall and go only to a trusted site like DPC and see if it works. If so, Windows firewall is blocking Firefox, if not... next problem.
Remember to turn the firewall back on.

Work Offline is not checked. I haven't looked at add-ons yet.

The worst of it is, I access my mail through My Yahoo and My Yahoo is freezing up when I try to do that. I can see the previews but when I click to go to mail then it just starts working and won't even let me close the tab.
That's in Internet Explorer, of course, which I am having to use right now.

Oddly enough, Windows Firewall was not on. Turning it on makes no difference as far as FF is concerned..

Do you have any other kind of firewall running on your computer? Zone Alarm is a fairly popular one for example. It's strange that it won't work even with a fresh install. I'm just going to assume you've tried the reboot already. Maybe try downgrading to the last available version of Firefox and see if that works for you.

No third-party firewall, nope.

If you have phone line DSl with the modem box, try switching the modem off for a minute, then restart the modem and the computer..
It may be a fluke and your ethernet cable connection at one end or the other is not working well enough. I got the same message one time and that was the fix.

Sometimes when I forget to turn off my Proxy settings from work I get that error.
Try checking to make sure a PROXY didn't get turned on by accident.
Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Connection > Settings
Most likely should be set to Direct Connection if you are using a home broadband connection. |

Yup. Heard of this happening to others as well.
From Mozilla's page:
If your Mozilla application can't connect but other programs such as Internet Explorer can...
Connection settings
Make sure your connection settings are correct. If you have Internet Explorer and it works, compare Internet Explorer's connection settings (e.g., Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections: LAN) to those of Firefox (Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Network -> Connection Settings) or Mozilla Suite (Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Proxies).
If your Firefox or Mozilla Suite connection settings are not correct but any changes you try to make are not saved after restarting the application, make sure you don't have a utility program such as "Hide IP Platinum" that modifies your connection settings. Even if the utility is no longer installed, the user.js file may still contain the modified settings [1]. To resolve this problem, open the profile folder and look for a user.js file. If found, either remove the user.js file or edit it to remove any "proxy" settings it may contain as outlined here, then reset the connection settings. |

Bear... Went into the Mozilla Forums and looked around. You are obviously NOT alone. Found these three ideas to try out.
"Download and run Trolly's enumprocess program. Programs that are recognized as firewalls are shown in red. Or post the results.
Sometimes incompatible extensions or a corrupted profile prevent Fx from running after an update. You can check this by starting Fx in safe mode or if that doesn't work, creating a new profile.
Also see //kb.mozillazine.org/Error_loading_any_website . If you press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and start the Task Manager, on the Processes tab you will find vsmon.exe. That's your firewall."
And...check your Virus program. Sometimes (especially icky norton) will see this as a virus and, not unlike a firewall, will say"uh-unh"
Good luck. When I get a few more minutes, I will look for more!

I had that happen briefly, but only once the other day. It was a DNS error, and has worked fine since. Probably nor related to your issue. A few add-ins I have on fierefox do regular updates as well. Do you have any security related extensions like NoScript that may be blocking things?
also check the proxy settings in FF. If it is trying to access via a nonexistent proxy server, you would have such a problem.

ETA: when I clicked to post this I got a popup saying that Windows Firewall was on and Norton recommended using their firewall instead. Which, of course, is how Windows firewall must've got turned off way back when... |

you may have to go into the norton settings > firewall > trusted programs. and add FF as a trusted program - or to 'always allow' internet connections.
and you don't need the windows firewall if you have the norton firewall running.

Glad you got that resolved before rollover.
I found a great antivirus program about 4 years ago. I have used it for hours almost everyday on line, and so far not a single glitch. It's called Mac OSX. ; )
