Thanks, Jeb. :) It's a cave on the side of Mt. Blanc in France, on the border with Italy. Climbers take a cable car from Chamonix about 2/3 of the way up, as do tourists like me. Then they walk down a corridor that ends in the ice cave, walk outside, and finish the climb. Whereas my friend and I took the cable car across and down to Italy, then spent 4 fantastic days hiking back around to Chamonix.

It's here on DPC in an earlier edit. I've learned a lot more about editing in the past 18 months. :)

Since you liked it, you might also like some of my other Alps shots.

I was at a farm shooting yesterday afternoon and this little tortie followed me around yammering at me the entire time. She was such a friendly little thing I thought I'd nominate her for the official Team Suck Barn Cat.

Cat people test......what's the most significant thing about torties?

In my world Spencer my wonderfull cat that was in my Spectacles entry lost his battle with cancer yesterday. Sylvester our other cat is sad as we are.

they're always females, aren't they?

Sorry to hear that, Rosemary, my condolences. If you feel up to it, tell us a little anecdote about him. What's your fondest memory?

Yep. And if anyone's interested...

In order to get the right levels of gene expression, one of the X chromosomes in females becomes inactive (doesn't happen in males, since they already only have one X). It turns into a sort of strange compact thing called a Barr body, that's still in the cell, but no genes are active on it.
Anyway, it happens early in development, and it's random which one of the two X's is inactivated, but once it happens, it's the same one from then on.

So the way you get the patches of colour is because one X chromosome has the 'brown' gene, the other has the 'black' gene, and the colour varies depending on which chromosome is linked.

It's important in humans because you sometimes get something like patches of genetic disorders, the same way you get patches of colour...

lol Not that anyone was necessarily interested in all that, but I thought it was interesting...

Sorry to hear Rosemary. Pets are special friends.

I'll be MIA for the next two weeks, vacation time. Cheers all and good shooting.

Awwww, so sorry about your cat Rosemary. Your other cat will probably grieve for quite a while.

Deb said she'd like to see more of my New Years Day outing after looking at my FS, so thank her for me posting this one, lol. Actually, this one might have scored better.

Rosemary, so sorry to hear about Spencer, hugs to you and all others who loved him.

Jeb, I bet that tortie is the reincarnation of my family's cat Sade! She just never shut up, followed you everywhere and omg she even looks like Sade, with the half-black face. Sade btw lived to be 18, passed on a few years ago.

And if I hadn't grown up with a tortie, there's no way I'd own Luna, a calico! Certainly not quite the same as a tortie in terms of temperament but she sure can act like a kitty on crack when she feels like it.

I'm suffering from the "I suck" blues. I shot a whole bunch of shots this morning for "Reflections" thinking I was being clever, only to find out that the shots just suck, but not in a good way. So I shot a whole bunch of shots this afternoon. Those aren't very good either. So I'm down to choosing which one will offend the most people and cause them to either think it doesn't meet the challenge or piss them off enough to give me a 3. I'll try for DPC friendly another day, I guess.

I may be asking for assistance in choosing the offending shot. I hate to bother Timfy with it, since he feels bad telling me they suck. :-)

I'd be happy to give you an opinion too, Deb, if you want it. Let me know if you need me to send you my regular email address.

Thanks, guys! I'll play a bit more with a few of them then stick 'em in my workshop and send you the ID numbers. Will that work?

absolutely! I'll keep an eye out for a PM.

Hey, Deb, I'll give you a lame opinion, too, if you like......my e-mail addy's on my profile page-click and send if you want.

I'm not buying that your images suck, I will grant that you may be having a dry spell.......I'm about half glad someone else is voicing that 'cause I haven't shot anything I've been super pleased with in a while other than one or two luck shots.

I was surprised at how my Architecture entry shoehorned into Old Ways did.....I think the title helped.

So hang in there, Deb, I know I always like your stuff.

Rosemary, sorry to hear of your kitty.....I've lost a couple to cancer, the worst being Lisa's and my very first kitty together.....Lucy was AWESOME, and to make things worse, she died with so much dignity it just broke our hearts.

So my prayers to you, remember all the homeless ones that need love.

I was just ribbing my wife about how she's turned into the quintessential cat lady 'cause the trunk of her car is a disaster area of cat food in cans, empty cans, gallon jugs of water, one to two big bags of dry......but it doesn't really make much of an impression since I get half the food half the time if I'm going to be passing by Pet-Smart. She and four other women take care of a herd of feral cats that live around where she works.....they do catch and release spaying to keep the excess kitten crop down as much as they can.

Ah, torties......they're a strange lot, yes, they're mostly female....there's the occasional male, but they're like Don's proverbial vermillion M&Ms. I've had probably half a dozen torties in the 30 years Lisa and I have been together....all of them have pretty much been inordinately attached to me. They are the most vocal, demanding, mercurial, strange, semi-psychotic, flaky, unusual kitties of the feline world.

I have NO idea why they'd be drawn to me.

We have"The Pud":[thumb]633255[/thumb]And Patcheroo:

Calicos aren't quite as strange as torties, but they're not normal, either.

It's strange, but I cannot imagine a house without a bunch of cats. I hate the litter boxes, hairballs, and general mayhem, but they are special, the little sh*ts. We've never had less than six for as long as I can remember.

Oh, and I finally broke that below 300lbs barrier for the first time in over three years. I've lost 60 pounds.

Thank you all for the thoughts. We got him from the pound when he was about 6yrs old. We should of called him kneader as he would just jump on your lap and knead you untill he got the spot right and then would settle in for a nap. I wanted a lap cat as all of our other cats were stand offs, but he was my lap cat and I'll miss that the most.

oh, yes, right, I forgot about that detail, Jeb - there is the occasional male tortie, but they are always sterile.
02/09/2008 05:41:25 PM · #1572
Deb, you're modest. Your real problem is that they're all fantastic. Sorry, I can't choose just one!
02/09/2008 10:04:16 PM · #1573
Hi all

Deb, don't feel bad, I pulled my Reflections entry cause it was an OK shot but just OK, I still may reshoot for it. Feel free to PM me with any possible entries, nope I won't vote on it...

Jeb, congrats on the weight loss and wow, you've had torties for 30 years?! You must be a masochist :-) Kudos to your wife and friends, they are doing the right thing. Give her a hug from me.

Rosemary, I'm sure another cat will enter your life soon and maybe it'll be Spencer returning in another form. Watch for similar markings, behaviour patterns, meows, etc etc...it could happen...

Cats all have such distinct personalities, but I do believe Susan is onto something here. When my Domino kitty passed on, I went to the shelter because I find it darn near impossible to live in a cat-free home. I found Emma. She's affectionate, purrs loudly, doesn't talk a whole lot, and loves to sleep on my lap. Domino was none of the above. But at night, when I went to bed, Domino would curl up and sleep under the covers right next to me with her head on my shoulder. Emma does the exact same thing. :-)

And thanks to Karen and Don for the input! Combined with mom's advice (and she's the first to point out she always picks the wrong one), I believe I have an entry! Now to shoot for either bread or panning or bread pans or bed pans or whatever the opens are... Gotta give hipychik a run for her money in the Enzo tournament.....
