We all know that perfect symmetry is usually a photographic faux pas, but how about a challenge where the theme is to be close to symmetry but including some added element that destroys the symmetry. Not to self promote as i'm not especially proud of either image, but looking at my own images and made me think of it...

Like this??

Not perfect, but close.

Cool idea.

bergiekat, I would call your slinky symmetric. I know it's not perfect, but there's no deliberate attempt to offset the symmetry. With the symmetry challenge, the focus was to find symmetry, even if it's not perfect. (I like the slinky photo by the way - great use of shadow!)

With the 'almost symmetry' challenge, the effort would be to focus more on the non-symmetric elements within the global symmetry. AP's examples are very subtle, but there are deliberate off-centre items in the photos. I like this idea, and it could make some very interesting challenge entries.

Maybe call it "Asymmetry within Symmetry" or something like that.
