Does anyone have suggestions on a quick release for a rebel xt? Pros and cons of third party products...

| Do you mean remote shutter release or are you really referring to the quick release you attach to the tripod head? |

The Canon remote shutter releases aren't that expensive, especially if you go for the wireless one. It runs around $25. For a wired version you'll pay a little more.
I haven't used any third party shutter releases. |

Ok thanks I will have to keep that in mind. I kick myself all the time when I miss a shot waiting on the self timer to beep beep beep.....

| I don't know anything about the Cannon because I shoot with a Nikon....but I have a wireless remote shutter release ($25.) and I love it. It's pretty straight forward as I would imagine the one for your camera. |

What kind of battery and battery life with that?

So how does the Canon Wireless Remote Control RC1 for Digital Rebel work? Does it plug into the mini jack where any other shutter release would? Does it fasten only on the front and can you fire the shutter while looking through the back of the camera? I want something I can look through and angle finder and shoot without moving the camera

The wireless remote uses infrared so no wired connection to the camera. If it's the same as my Elan II film camera there's an infrared sensor on the front of the camera as well as on the side. Just point the remote at the sensor and press the button to trigger the shutter.
Ideally, you'd set up the camera by looking through the viewfinder and then step away to trigger the shutter with the remote.
ETA: The manual for your camera should have a section on accessories. It will describe the remotes that work with the Rebel in there. Also, at the front of the manual there will be a schematic diagram of the camera explaining all the buttons, sensors etc.

I bought this one for around US$23 (incl. shipping).
It is very affordable and works very, very well. It supports bulb mode, which some remote do not support. Although that one is for the 5D/30D/40D, etc., there are similar ones for the Digital Rebel, just search that site.
This remote does not require "line of sight" to use. You can be behind the camera, to the side of the camera. The range is 100 meters (over 300 ft), so you can stand a long way from the camera, if needed.
Here are some photos shot while using this wireless remote:
. .
This one was in bulb mode, with an exposure of 67 seconds...

I think I am going to purchase the Canon Remote Switch RS60 E3 does anyone own this or have a better suggestion?
//www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004WCID/ref=ord_cart_shr?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance
the specs on amazon say "replicates all shutter release functions" so I think that will probably serve me best. I cannot imagine moving away from my camera to take s shot while I am down on my knees in the forest...

That one should work for you just fine.
BTW, when I said step away from the camera to take the shot, I meant only enough so you don't accidentally bump the camera.
What's nice about the wireless remote is that you can use it for images that you want to be in without having to run around the camera during the 10sec of self timer to get in place. |

Or use the timer, which is free..
I use the Timer Switch (TC03 or something) which is great for time lapses but costly.

| I have heard that you can also use a universal TV remote, you just have to play with the settings and the buttons. |
