I have been approached by a Yale professor who is going to be publishing a book through Oxford Press and he has asked me to design his jacket cover, based on a highly edited collage shot he saw of mine on flickr. I am so flattered and love the challenge, but have no idea what to charge. Since it seems I will be creating the entire thing, I don't know. I asked him if there is a set budget for the project but haven't heard back from him yet. It will involve quite a bit of Photoshop work, as well as images and text.
Anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to shoot myself in the foot and overprice it. |

Judy, that's awesome, hon!!! Congrats!
Since he hasn't given you an idea of budget, I would quote him an hourly rate, then be realistic about the hours required. You also don't want to shoot yourself in the foot by undercharging. Personally, $95/hour feels warm & fuzzy.

I am so bad at hourly stuff. I never know how long it is going to take me so I guess that makes sense, but based on an hourly rate, I won't be able to give him a set price. YIKES. I guess I'll wait to hear back and then keep you posted. THANKS! |

I have done quite a few of these, actually; book jackets as well as full book designs and, sometimes, editing as well. There's typically not a large budget for the jacket design on anything but mainstream, potential best-seller-type books. If you got $500.00 for the jacket design you'd be doing reasonably well.

Some Yale swag would be cool, like a sweatshirt or hoody.
