I've had a Tamron 17-50 for about 7 months now and I'm a big fan of it. At F4 -F8 it's super sharp all over the place. Focussing isn't bad. I've used faster, but i've used slower. It does make a weird high-pitched whirring noise when it focuses which you quickly get used to but may get you noticed if you're trying to be super quiet.

I paid $350 for mine used and for the money it does the job superbly. I was upgrading from the kit lens on my 400d and wanted something more or less the same focal length but with better image quality.

overall, i'm satisfied with it. When I upgrade my camera to a 5d, or 5D mk2 this lens won't fit so I will most likely get rid of it. As to whether i'd buy it again if it broke: if I could afford something better i'd get it, but if I had around $400-$500 to spend and that was it then I'd go for it again, but for the money it's damned good. Looks cool too.
