I have a four year old with Chicken Pix - just started. I know what to do in general, I just have one thing I'm not sure how to handle: he has blisters around his anus, and they're very painful. Should I use an oatmeal cream, or a diaper rash type of cream to make him more comfortable? I don't want to make it worse by slathering it in a cream that could make the blisters even more sensitive.

Thanks for all advice!

Calamine lotion works pretty well.

Trying to remember... I think I used calamine lotion, but witch hazel would be soothing and cooling if the skin's not raw.

naturalparenting suggests chickweed cream (which I've never heard of) or a dilution of 1 tablespoon per 500 ml water of cider vinegar.

I think I'd avoid the oatmeal in that area, because it seems it might be irritating if there's any tiny granules left behind on the behind.

Sigh... I sympathise though... :(

eta; I wonder if you could make your own chickweed infusion?

Oops... winter there.... no chickweed growing. Sorry, wish I could send you some...

Aveeno oatmeal bath is soothing and works great for the pox.

It completely dissolves so no granules to irritate.

2 or 3 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda disolved in the bath is also worth trying, and let him or her run around without any clothes on their bottom half.
