I'm pretty sure you're right.

I'm also pretty sure the Gradient adjustment layer contains pixel data and would ultimately be DQ'd brought to SC's attention.

Sorry, I already have a few DQ's or I'd test it out ... :-)

If you are referring to the gradient map adjustment layer that doesn't contain any pixel data. If it did then it wouldn't be an adjustment layer.

ETA: Sorry I missunderstood. I was thinking of a different tool. The gradient map should be 100% legal in basic and I assume (now) that's not what you are talking about here.

What? A Map? I must be missing something here..how do you get a gradient map to be legal but not gradient tool? If they both come out with the same effect?

Here is an example of a gradient fill adjustment, which is illegal in Basic editing.

Hope this helps. :)

As you can see in Joe's post the only thing the gradient map does is adjust the color of the pixels already present and adjusts the contrast a bit. It doesn't create new pixels like the gradient tool does.

I didn't realize gradient had two different options ..that is so cool...now something else to play with..not sure I like the technique but would be fun to mess with. Thanks!

I use the black and white gradient alot convert to black and white. If you click on the gradient in the box it gives you more options and I choose the black and white one. Then put a selective color adjustment underneath it in the layers pallette and play with the black slider of each color to brighten and darken different colors. :)
