I would like to know how DPChallenge calculates votes for challenges.
For instance:
Entry 1 receives 10 votes and has an average of 6.0000 total for the challenge and
Entry 2 receives 200 votes and has an average of 4.8000 total for the challenge
The challenge ends will entry 1 place higher than entry 2 ?
If so that says that in the calculations the amount of votes means nothing If so why?
Shouldn't it be a factor that only 10 people bothered to even look at and
vote on entry #1 and even though entry # 2's picture may not be quite as perfect as
#1's entry the #2 entry was interestingly better simply by number of votes?

:-D I'd probably break even.

Needless to say, if you gave extra points for more votes, nudes and other types of eye candy would have an advantage on this site.

I don't think there's ever been a case where certain photos got tons more or tons less votes than others though and I really can't see the logic behind the OP being a good one.

Entries are ordered randomly on each user's voting page, and most users vote in order. Not much point in penalizing anyone for random chance.

You gotta love it.
Someone cant even ask a simple serious question on how something works on this site
Not one thing was said about the content in a picture as you did ( nudes )
This was a simple question about how votes were being counted and what was included in the process period.
It is simply a calculations question,
But hey! sorry for any inconvenience the question might have caused someone.

I'd look at it as "Quality" over "Quantity"! I'd take 25 votes of 8's & 9's over 300+ votes of 4's & 5's.

Underneath the jokes there is an important point. Nudes and other "eye candy" do get more views, by sheer virtue of their content.

First off the people that you are calling out are a little more experienced; seasoned veterans if you will. Your post didn't sound the most polite.

I think I understand what you were wondering; The scoring is calculated as follows.
If I receive:
03 - #10 votes, that = 30 points
07 - #6 votes, that = 42 points
12 - #4 votes, that = 48 points
so now my running total of points = 120 points. Now divide that total by the total number of votes received which equals 22.

Your picture will have a resulting score of 5.4545. Does this help any?

ETA: correction to wording layout.

Eye candy (such as nudes) do tend to pick up a few more votes too... along with tons of views.

Did everyone miss the point?

Simple:

The amount of votes don't figure into the calculations at all

YES or NO?

I take it by all the comments the answer is no!

Thanks for the Help.

Some people to scan the thumbs to vote... so eye candy and nudes can get a few extra votes that way, too.

The answer is NO, but it sounded as if you were suggesting that it should, hence the way I answered your post initially.

an average is an average is an average
total score / # of votes

The score is a straight average of all votes cast. There is no weighting by number of votes.

There's no beat people up for missing your point. Perhaps if all of us missed it, rephrasing might be more effective than berating us?

Sure they do .... as the divisor to the total. :-)

I'm just curious ... if you were designing the algorithm, how would you do it? Besides the obvious "point values" each vote has, how would you weight the votes?

Do you mean where the more votes I've cast now gives each of my 1,000 votes more "power", if you will, over John Doe's 5 votes cast? I'm pretty sure that's not the case here; but I don't know how you'd set up something like that.

Again, correct me if I'm wrong but this (see following) is how the scores are calculated. Period. End of story. (right?)

If I receive:
04 - #10 votes, that = 40 points
05 - #7 votes, that = 35 points
07 - #6 votes, that = 42 points
15 - #5 votes, that = 75 points
12 - #4 votes, that = 48 points
so now my running total of points = 240 points. Now divide that total by the total number of votes received which equals 43.

Your picture will have a resulting score of 5.5814.

zxaar - check your email.

If you have a question as to why a post was deleted, best to contact Site Council directly rather than taking it up in the thread -- otherwise the thread invariably gets pulled of topic.

You should have an email from me -- if you would like me to further elaborate there, I will be happy to do so.

Negative, a couple points to consider...
- The premise you offer is unlikely to happen. The difference between the number of votes in a challenge is never a low of 10 vs. a high of 200. Take a look at the most recent results for the challenge â6â. All of the entries received between ~175 and ~195 votes. The high score had 187 votes the low score had 183. This is a pretty typical spread.
- The number of votes does have an impact though. In fact after 80 to 100 votes scores normalize and typically donât move more than a tenth of a point or two (usually less).
- Based on these factors using the pure average vote is a pretty effective and fair method for scoring.

I'll be happy to answer, but not here. Feel free to reply to my email, or to start a new thread. Discussing why your post was removed is off-topic for this thread.
