This is more of a theory question than an actual problem at the moment.
I use levels first and then curves, but I have been wondering if the use of levels may pushing some highlight details up to where the curves adjustment then blows them out. Should I perhaps just use curves and leave levels alone?
I have not really learned how to use layers yet, but I suspect this may be what I should use so that I can bring out any lost details from a lower layer.
(Note, My camera does JPEG only, so I don't have a raw file to pull the details in from) |

Curves can do any adjustment that levels can, so if you are using both levels and curves, you may consider just using curves to accomplish the entire task. Another suggestion is to use curves on an adjustment layer, which can be changed later if you decide that it needs it.
Do keep an eye on the histogram so you know if you are blowing out detail that you want to retain. I always keep the histogram showing and in "all channels" view to show the histograms for the individual color channels. |

I can see that being the case, yes, usually I either use one or the other... but in some cases I start with curves do any processing I want, then after that if I see I want a bit more contrast, then I would tweak the levels around =]
But just keep playing around with both settings, 1 setting at a time etc depends on the original shot as well I suppose |

The more I understand this stuff, the more questions I come up with. Glad I know where to go for the answers!
Thanks! |

In fact, in CS3, the curves tool incorporates the levels functionality, complete with histogram!
