Had planned on doing this this in my morning, Rob (see, now I can call you that again without fear of confusion). Notice how I skillfully arranged for it to be changed in-between challenges (I actually did wait to put the "confirmation" in until after Sunday night's challenge end time, so that it wouldn't mess up the scripts, given that I had two shots in ending Sunday; ain't I swelled?).
For those who missed my reference and purpose, it goes back to when we were talking about  Bear_Music, whose name is Robert, joining TS. And yes, it's a reference to Robert_the_Bruce, but no, I'm not going to kill our fearless leader (even if he hangs out with Captain Kirk; well, maybe if he hangs out with Captain Kirk), but a reference just because Bruce is what Peter  raish started calling me Bruce when we were "arguing" about who got to be Rob with a new Rob coming on board, and the username has both Bruce and Robert in it.
So, um, is everyone clear? :P

I'm clear on the whole name confusion, but not so much on much of anything else.

Woo hoo! (You may think it's weird to be excited about a 5.5, but hey, I'm living on the edge, for the moment, in the NOW and a 5.5 is fo'shizzle, or whatever it is the kids say these days.)
Edit to add that it didn't last long, though. Still, it got to 5.5! I'm delirious with joy and such.

Went out with the 30D on Sunday, shot 50 pics. Got home and loaded them onto laptop and 20 were out of focus, lighting was poor and very hard to accept!
Same location 2 weeks earlier with K100D, about 60 shots, all were in focus, great colour etc.
First lesson, K100D has anti-shake reduction in-body!
Second lesson, Canon 30D is not so aggressive with in camera sharpening and saturation.
I feel I need to go right back to Auto settings again, and take it slowly. One thing that worked well, the 17-85mm IS USM lens. Took a couple usin RAW and flash, they were sharp and good colour.
Need to do a lot of learning, just when I thought I was okay using P,AV and M modes. Been thinking of taking the 30D back and getting the K20D when it arrives. But, I like the 30D feel, all those lenses and so many good photos here on DPC.
Why, oh, why do I put myself through this every year? I get a new camera and then need more after a few months? I am going to nail this 30D, it won't beat me and I want to get more glass later, not new bodies!! |

Can I please get an opinion on my shot I am considering for architecture? With all the usual caveats, blah blah blah.

Steve, I highly highly recommend the 24-105 IS lens. I don't work well without IS. I have a bit of a tremor issue that's minor unless you want to hold a camera still. That and I seem to be getting older all the time. :-)
If you're shooting RAW, try doing levels to balance your histogram, then +15 in contrast, +10-15 in saturation, and some sharpening. See if that gives you at least a more comfortable starting point to view your shots. The other thing I highly recommend (and it's easier and faster) is set the 30D to shoot both RAW and a small jpeg, then use that small jpeg to view your shots initially. You can set that jpeg to be standard, or customize it to increase sharpness, contrast, saturation to taste. (Read the manual to figure that part out, but it's a menu setting somewhere.) |

I will try it at the weekend. As for reading a manual, what's that about?? I am a man, I don't read manuals, I curse, kick and shout until it works or breaks!! :)

Steve, Lightroom handles RAWs just fine, and I've stopped using JPG at all since I started using Lightroom at the top of my playflow (I would call it a workflow, but well, I'm havin' too much fun to be working). It imports them well, handles changes in xmp sidecars, and allows for easy delete/marking/sorting. Shoot what you like, Steve, don't let your technology dictate what you do! And if it doesn't seem to do what you want, well then, ask, someone's bound to know a way!
And keep at the new camera; once you've got it, you'll wonder how you lived with someone else making decisions for you all the time!

OK I'm masochistic enough to enter for Old Ways...deadly boring image but technically clean....I think. Part of the problem with previous two entries may have been the fact that I was shooting only on Normal, not Fine. Haven't dared yet dip my toe in the daunting waters of RAW yet. Need time to get used to shooting with this cam, then will mess around with that.
Octopussy still single *sigh*, female I found who seemed perfect for him already adopted. That particular website is incredibly out of date and owner of cat rescue is even more of a technopeasant than me.
So the hunt for a young female cat who likes older males continues... |
