I'm looking into purchasing an external flash for my Canon 20D. Any thoughts on what I should buy? I've never used one before so any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

What's your price range. You can get one from $20 to $400.
You can go the strobist route and buy some cheap flash guns and some pocket wizards.
Or just buy one of Canon's latest flash. Again, depends on your price range. |

I'd go with the Canon 580EX II. When I bought the 550 and the original 580, they were closer to $500. I recently picked up the II for about $340 and it's a much better flash than the 550 and still an improvement over the original 580 (except for how they hid the Master/Slave functionality, that part sucks).

| If you don't care about TTL working (which it wouldn't in most cases off camera anyways), there are plenty of older Nikon SB flashes on Ebay. I would suggest a SB-26 as it can be triggered optically. I have an SB-28 and it works awesome. I'm pretty sure you can use some of the nikon flashes on your camera in manual, but definitely check to see the voltage ratings for your camera (just google it) first, otherwise you might fry your camera! Of course, the new Canon flashes would give you TTL metering on camera or attached with a TTL cord. |

I'm also relatively new to flash. I recently bought a 430ex and have been using it on and off the camera with varying degrees of success - but that's more my ability than the flash capability. So far I haven't needed it to do anything that it can't do. I find the buttons a bit fiddly in M, but I'm an interface fascist ;)
I've literally just today got a second 430ex and the ST-E2 speedlite transmitter. Both 430's will be slaves off the ST-E2 and I think I'll be sorted for quite a while, lighting wise (and not hugely expensive). Just need a pair of stands and umbrellas and I'm off experimenting with light.
You could get the 580 which can also function as a master to other 430 or 580 slaves, which is nice...but I wanted to have two off-the-camera flashes without using ebay transmitters (mine are crap!).
