I see a third option to add to Don's list:
3) Realize that you didn't convey the challenge theme to even TSers, so that probably means you missed the mark.
Not necessarily all that painful, just a chuckle and a determination to move on.
Trust me, I know from whence I speak. This is the shot where I just had to laugh it off (well, Deb was kind):

Jeffrey, don't kill me, you know I love you, but I thought this was Darth Vadar's helmet at first. |

Yep. Yep yep yep. I'm with you on this. (Damn DPL teammates.... "great shot - go with it! Won't score well..." Shoulda listened to the latter rather than the former. Heh.) |

Except there are a pretty good number of positive comments on the shot, including some acknowledging it might be a bit out of the box but was either right on or they still liked it, but those did not come from TSers. I guess it's just unpredictable where one finds an audience . . .

Hey, we said from the beginning our team was about helping us create images we liked for ourselves, not for DPC score. Besides, I absolutely, 100%, sure-fire, bet your camera on it, stone-cold-guarantee your shot will be more loved by TS than mine. As will Catherine's. Heck, *I* like your shot more than mine. :P

Oh sure, you bet MY camera on it... I do have one comment (out of two thus far) from a Suckmate. Thanks, Brian! |

I object! That doesn't merit its own number. You can have "1.a."
Dear Bruce, perhaps you've heard from the tags but not the rags. We are a diverse group (some would say motley). |

My ugly and uncolorful bird is sitting in the low 5's as well.
I haven't had enough sleep lately to care. |

On the "meets challenge" issue.... take your potential entry, and show it to someone who's not on this site, and say "Does this say (insert challenge title here) to you?" For instance, look at Juliboc's "6" entry - were I to show that to a coworker and say "Does this say '6' to you?", chances are it will. So would eyewave's ribbon winning entry (though to be honest, I missed the cool hash-mark bit of the composition - I'm a little slow). Now were I to show Bruce's to a coworker, they might not see "6". A photographer, if asked the same question, may see the long exposure and think "6 seconds", but I'm guessing my coworker would say "it kinda says 9 to me". So Bruce, you needed to invert the bus. Simple solution. :-)
And yes, you never know where you will or won't find an audience.
As an aside, there's the off chance that were I to show an entry currently in voting and say "does this say (blank) to you" it may well not say blank. Hmmm. Perhaps I need to take my own advice.... |

ok, Bruce, now that I've actually looked at your photo (duh), I would say you did a good job at creating an OOBIE photo. The thing about OOBIE, though, is that you're skirting the edge. Even people who like to see Out Of the Box entries still have their own criteria about what meets the challenge. For what it's worth, I would have found your image very refreshing if I had been voting. However, I decided to spare myself the pain of seeing a challenge full of photos using the same criteria you would find on Sesame Street. |

My bird's sitting at a rather painful 4.3 - god, it's not that great, but I would've thought at least close to 5 would be appropriate...
Ah well. Bring on the Free Study :) |

Yeah ... well ...
I have never seen people in Team Suck be other than brutally honest ... (or ok ... sometimes supportive and overly complimentary by times) ... but I have never seen rude dismissal of shots for DNMC.
At any rate ... bring it all out in the open ... cut and paste the comments so that they may be scrutinized ... tell us what you think is wrong (or right) about them and then ... I am SURE you are gonna get a boatload of constructive suggestions regarding your photo ... OR ... wrist slapping of TS members if they were way out of line.
... so ... put it on the table ... WUSSUP?
... OH ... POOK! ... I just realized that I am an entire page behind ... feel free to address what I said or ignore me ... HEH

Thanks all who responded to my rant about DNMC votes from TSers. Don, and Deb, and Jeffrey, and everyone else is right (though of course it's 1a and not point 3); everyone has different ideas and ideals. I just wondered why folks who are "here" (in TS) are still thinking along those lines (I haven't DNMC'd a shot in ages, but certainly not since I joined TS). That was my main rant, I guess, against DNMC comments from the place where I would come to escape the DNMC storm. And I don't want to "out" anyone here in the thread; the image stands for itself, I really like it, it got a fav during voting from a friend who didn't know it was mine, and the comments are there for all to judge on their own merit!

Nice new moniker, Rob/Bruce/Rob/Bruce/oh, heck... Your new name made me think of "Roger the Shrubberer" for some reason. |

So I check to see if there are new posts (there are) but what I noticed first was Bruce the Robert. Too freakin' funny! And rather cool, too. Nice new moniker! And I'm not sure I want to know who Roger the Shrubberer is.... |
