Yeah, but that's Calgary, it's expected there. This is Paradise; even though it snows every year we'll deny it with our dying breaths!! |

Lol, remembered this blog entry I did 3 years ago... still applicable!
"Victorians are funny ducks when it comes to weather. It's always, always the main topic of idle conversation, usually some form of complaint, yet we refuse to make any concessions to it.
You folks who live where cold winters are the norm.... what do you do when the snow flies? You make sure you have your winter tires on and some extra weight in the trunk, you have the woodpile and larder stocked and you get out the woolies, right? You actually OWN a snowshovel and can use it without giving yourself a heart attack and you know where your emergency candles are, complete with matches. A foot or two of snow? Hey, it's inconvenient but what are you going to do but go with the flow (or fall)?
Victorians have two techniques for handling snow; denial and panic. Hey people, this is Victoria! The land of nonstop flowers and golf at Christmas. Our carollers are as likely to be dressed in shorts and Hawaiian prints as traditional garb, and when they sing "Winter Wonderland" or "Let It Snow" the images evoked are as foreign as those of the wise men on camelback. Our favourite winter pastime is gloating over weather reports from "back east" and mailing out photos in our Christmas cards of us barbequing the turkey. "Hey, did you see on the news about those ice storms in Quebec? SUCKERRRRRRS!"
But Victoria DOES get snow whether we admit it or not. We get it EVERY year. Granted, it isn't normally much or last long, but people, it happens! And when it does, we act like it's the first time ever. Maybe global warming, maybe a curse from the gods, maybe just a random fluke, but not something to be expected. Oh, and it's a total catastrophe, possibly even the end of the world as we know it! The weather reports have been forecasting it for two weeks, yet as the first flakes begin they're greeted with disbelief. OMG, it's snowing??? It's can't be!!
For most Victorians, as soon as it begins to stick panic mode sets in. "How am I going to get to work tomorrow? I'd better call in sick. They should close. They'd better let us go home early today before the roads get bad. But they'd better keep the stores open because I need to stock up in case we can't get out for a few days. I'll have to get up early and listen to the radio to see if the schools will be open. What will I do with the kids if they close? Oh, must remember to get batteries for the radio. Should we cancel plans for the weekend?" All these thoughts and more flash through the mind simultaneously, taking about 1.3 seconds.
For the rest of the population, it's business as usual. Snow? What snow? It doesn't snow in Victoria! They'll wade through it in their shorts and sandals until their toes turn blue rather than let it "beat them". Hey, we're founded on hardy Brit stock, we shall persevere and eventually reign supreme! This type considers snow a personal affront and refuses to budge an inch from their norm, and what better place to prove their superiority over the elements than behind the wheel? Of course, when they end up writing off their ostentatious overkill of a vehicle it's never their fault. Of course not!
Somehow they expect every inch of every road to be constantly monitored, plowed and sanded and, preferably, dry. And heaven forbid that, once it's needed, a towtruck be not available and within half a mile! But most definitely the number one reason that they had an accident wasn't the fact that they were driving 120kph in near white-out conditions, but was because of the other idiots who don't know how to drive in a little snow. Sure, makes perfect sense to me!
Finally, once the snow has melted (which usually takes a grand total of about a day and a half) Victorians act as if they'd just survived the blitz on London, sharing harrowing tales of near disaster and congratulating themselves on beating the elements once again before getting out the golf clubs for a quick nine then drinks on the patio.
Yeahhh, it's great to be a Victorian in winter.... :) " |
