So I run out of juice today and cannot find my 3rd battery (it's been a while since I charged them & it is COLD outside).... no prob I think, I have that AA tray that comes with the battery grip & a stack of AA batteries. The stupid thing just does not work... at all... nothing but too low battery blinking with 6 BAND NEW Duracell batteries. It's the "fixed" one with the gold... but what a complete waste of space.... Does anyone elses work?

Alkaline batteries simply can't deliver power in the way that a digital camera like the 20D needs. I doubt the AA tray will work with anything but rechargeable batteries, or in a pinch, "maybe" Lithium.

In addition, alkaline batteries perform very poorly in extreme cold. This probably compounded your problem.

I have the Opteka vertical grip for my 40D and it too, has the AA battery magazine. I've loaded it with AA's to briefly try it out when I first bought it and it worked. I haven't tried it since.

The instruction manual that came with it says that the shot count was some ridiculously low number when using AA's. With no flash, it's approximately 80 shots at 20 degrees (C). With 50% flash, it's approx. 50 shots.

In low temperature (0 C), approximate shots with no flash is 0. With 50% flash, it is 0. Seriously...this is in the instruction sheet!

Yes, alkaline batteries absolutely can not perform in low temps.

Did the same with my 350d. Loaded some brand new duracells and it took about 5 shots, then would not stay on due to low battery.

I have not tried rechargeables in it...

OTOH - I use a huge pile of rechargeable NiMh batteries, and rarely even use the Nikon battery that came with the camera. When just ONE of the Nikon's are $40+, I don't see any other choice. Expecially when I can recharge ALL of the AA's in the same time as charging just one of the Nikon batteries, yet can't even use the camera battery in the flashes. The initial cost is slightly higher than two of the Nikons, but I have enough AA's to run down:

D200 - TWICE
SB800- FOUR TIMES

That's two of the 15 minute chargers, and 32 rechargeable AA's, for roughly the same price. While I can't say anything about the Canon system, this has served me INCREDIBLY well.

Hope this helps...

It's got 6 of them though!!... I knew it would be nothing like the real batteries but NOTHING-NADA-ZIP %^#$^$ and I was not using the pop-up flash cause I had the 580 attached. What burns me is that I carry the tray for a last resort backup since it's so light..... that and the fact I had rechargables in the flash but used regular cause I know not to mix them :-)

I just tried it with rechargeables [@ a dozen shots in burst mode] and it does work with them (at least when fully charged which these 6 are). Not sure how much juice is in them cause the battery indicator has never worked for me with the grip on (hence why I ran out in the first place). At 20c in the house I get exactly zero from regular batteries, so the cold outside did not change the outcome much :-0/
