I'm supposed to bring one to a party tonight. Anyone know if there's even in season? Do I have a chance at finding one?

I have a bottle of wine from Persimmon Creek Vineyards, but I don't think that counts!

You've been instructed to bring a Persimmon? Is this some perverted form of a Scavenger hunt?

I've seen them in stores here in Florida, but I'm not sure you'll be able to find one on such short notice in your neck of the woods.

It's a party celebrating the Jewish holiday of Tu B'Shevat, the new year for trees. It is commonly celebrated as an agricultural holiday and eating fruits and nuts is customary.

_eug is right. This has gotta be some scavenger hunt type deal. Persimmons ripen in the fall, usually after the October frosts. Nothing better than a ripe persimmon and nothing worse than an unripe one. Not sure how you'd ever find one this time of year.

Edit. Guess it's not a scavenger hunt. :D

I think they're usually in season in the late fall to early winter, so they should be slightly out of season now. But the good news is that many places make candied persimmons by peeling them and hanging them coated in sugar. You should be able to find a box of those and maybe even some fresh ripe ones at any market that sells Asian foods. If you do buy fresh ones, only buy the short Fuyu persimmons and not the taller oblong ones. Fuyu persimmons are for eating, but the others (I think they're called "Harare" or something like that) taste like cotton and should only be used for candying or display. Good luck!

Check your local asian market, they always have them.

Local Asian market? Clearly you've never been to Lancaster. ;-)

Persimmon are like "sharon fruit" (that what my dictionary says) , it's very common here in Spain , we find them during all year in the normal markets.

Just went to the local supermarket. They have persimmons for sale (maybe they had been cool-stored for a few months); they also have the dried persimmons.

I guess it's a bit late for the party, though. ;-Þ
