I have the option to buy a Canon 20D, used for $500. It is in excellent condition with about 9000 clicks.

I have a Rebel 300D.

I know that the 20D has better noise capability and ISO 3200.

Ignoring those two advantages...what would compel me to get that camera? i.e. can you talk me into it? :)

Thanks....

All I can say is.... I owned the 300D and upgraded to the 20D.... the difference was amazing.... I did miss the remote trigger though.

i just made the same move as you. i bought my dads for $300, body only. he bought the 40d. feels much nicer, faster shutter speed, bigger memory buffer. took a while getting used to where all the buttons are, but its worth it. cons, same size lcd, a little heavier. im happy with it, but would like a bigger lcd mostly.

$500 sounds like a great deal! I went from a 300D to a Rebel XT and THEN a 20D and it was still worth it. The speed alone will be a vast improvement, and the thumbwheel on the back makes operating the camera easier. You'll get a higher resolution, better focusing with fast lenses (and more focus points), a more durable body and other features such as flash exposure compensation. One thing you'll lose is the option for a cheap remote control.

I have this for about 3 years now and I am happy with this. I shot about 15000 clicks and even today I feel that its pretty strong!

I still have to read the reviews, but, what is this I hear about the remote trigger?

The 300D can use a cheap infrared trigger ($30 or so). The 20D has a different connector and the cheapest wireless remote from Canon is something like $350! There are third party solutions and wired remotes, but still... yikes!

You can get inexpensive wireless remotes with 300 ft range for $70 or so on eBay. I have one of those and it sure beats the line-of-site, infrared remote on my old Pentax K100D!

Hmm...this is quite a drawback....and may be a showstopper. I'm not to concerned with a wireless remote. In fact, all I have for my 300D is a wired trigger, so I don't have to push the button on the camera. Thats all I really care about.

I also forgot to mention that he is including 2 batters, 1 cannon, 1 after market, and an aftermarket charger (with cigarette lighter adapter).

Also...does anyone know if this lens is compatible with the 20D?

I ask only because I really like this lens and don't want to get a new one.

I would assume so, yes. However, I am unfamiliar with the lens and never used one for my 20D so I may be wrong. It is for Canon, and one person here uses it with a 10D so more than likely it is compatible...

Yes, it'll work just fine. Not a very good lens, but it'll work.

:) But for the price...its a good lens:

It pales in comparison to your Tamron

No argument there....I took the quantaray on a whale watch, and got some wonderful purple spots from the glaring sun. Not to mention having to shoot at 1/4000 to balance the boat rocking. I still got some nice shots though. Not as good as they guy next to me with a Canon IS lens. :)

One quick question. Is there any way to edit the files on the card so that the 20D I get will keep the number continuous from what I currently have on my 300D?

I'm at 10758 (0758 due to reroll). How can I make the 20D record the next image as 10759?

I don't think so... unless you sit there and take pictures of your foot until you reach the magic number.

What the heck....this is a photo site...here are those whale images. Certainly not the best, but pretty good for that lens. Baby steps...one toy at a time...

Not bad, but the first one was probably just a fluke. ;-P

Faster frame rate
I think the 20D has the following:
spot metering and a couple of other metering modes
Focusing modes like AI-focus and AI-servo
FEC, second curtain sync

Thanks. After looking at the reviews last night...I have the following questions.

1) I hear this autofocuses better than the 300D...true?
2) I read in this post that the 20D has spot metering. Yet, the specs say partial at 9% of center. The 300D lists the same spec. Comments?

3) The exposure values and aperture options say 0.3 OR 0.5. The 300D is 0.3. Whats the deal with OR 0.5 ?

4) Any benefit of ETTL-II for the 580EX over just ETTL (300D)?

5) I see it lists the same battery as the 300D. True?

Thanks,
Paul

1. True. THe 20D has more autofocus points and more sensitivity
2. No spot meter.
3. Dunno that one
4. I believe ETTL-II communicates more info, like color tempterature
5. Yep, same battery (it might be a higher capacity version, but your 300D battery will work)

3. i think that's the spacing between exposure and aperture. in other words, f-stops will go: 16, 18, 20, 22 if set at 0.3 and 16, 19, 22 if on 0.5.
01/26/2008 10:35:27 AM · #25
Yes, I know...but which is it? Is that a custom setting or is it a camera version option?

I noticed that there were 2 versions of the 20D.
