With a few threads talking about people being bored at DPC, how about letting the members have a little input in challenge topic selection by polling the members.

Each week DPC could put a poll in the left column on the home page with 10 challenge subjects. Members can choose which one they would like to have as the following weeks challenge. The challenge subject that receives the most votes would be the Members challenge for the following week.

It's not a bad idea at all.

I don't think giving the topic ahead for the next week is such a good idea.... but maybe having members vote on the popularity of the pool of ideas with the current method of selection - based on the popularity - is a good idea.

I think this is certainly something worth kicking around to get some interest.

Not good idea. If there is a list of challenge suggestions, people will be ready for them and that beats the purpose of "challenge" here... SCs select the subject, we don't so we would be surprised and see if we can get ready in time and shoot the photo... not getting ready weeks ahead, that wouldn't be fair challenge would it?

It's been done once before as a special challenge... it might happen again, also as a special challenge.

The idea was recently (like, yesterday) tossed out for discussion as part of a related project.

Actually SC don't select challenges... it would give them an unfair advantage. It is rumored that Langdon throws darts to select challenges.

The members would only have one week to vote on the topic they like. DPC could hide the results until the poll is over and the topic is announced. I don't know about others but I have a hard time going out and getting shots for one challenge much less trying to get an advantage by doing it for 10 possible challenges. Poll ends on Sunday Midnight and is announced at the same time. IMO I don't see a creditable problem with the idea.

That's not entirely true! Sometimes Drew throws the darts! I'm also told that on occasion, they even use a ouija board!

You would be ready, at least have ideas of 10 subjects, trust me, many would. Now, is this bad or good. It probably will help the quality of the images going up, because most would be prepared.

About throwing dart thing, you probably right, since SC enters to challenges as well. I stand corrected :)

I remember the poll your talking about and found it interesting and fun. I don't remember any problems associated with the way it way done. In fact that is where I got the idea. If I remember correctly one of the subject was "Black and White". It was a long time ago...hard to believe I have been a member almost 4 years.

I guess the best way to see if having multiple subjects to choose from to see if it would effect scores would to be to take a look at the Open Challenges; pre-exclusive and exclusive.

Pre-Exclusive Open challenge
Avg High Score: 7.295943386
Median Score: 5.113355026

Exclusive Open Challenge
Avg High Score: 7.273073984
Median Score: 5.329119919

Not much of a difference in having one challenge or two to think about before shooting.
