Seems a lot of anti-Photoshop sentiments are coming out here, claiming that DPC isn't about real photography and other similar poop, sooo ribboners... can you shine w/o PS... I know you can..
No matter how "DPcish" a ribbon winner may be, none of them start out with a bad photo.
So let's give the big dogs a chance to show the nay-sayers that DPC's middle name is Photography and toss a little water on this fire.

I like the idea. And that's all I'd like to say about that. |

I like the idea but I'm going to disagree with one of your points.

I used to believe this totally. However, having seen some of the originals for validations, some of them have started with some pretty crappy shots. Shot that normally would have been put in the bin. However, they may have known what they wanted to do in photoshop and were able to let some things (exposure, for one) go.
I think a truer statement would be, those who can consistently win ribbons on dpc can probably do so without photoshop, because they do know how to make a good photograph to begin with.

I would definitely agree with that statement.

HEY! Stop talking about my pictures! Although, seriously, yes I absolutely DO know what I am planning to do with them when I capture them, so they are never in danger of getting binned...

It would be nice if that were true, but I wonder about myself :-) On the other hand, I don't "consistently" win ribbons here; 1 or 2 a year is more my speed :-)

Looking back trough past Minimal challenges, I see a lot of the usual suspects among the top 20-30 entries. Doesn't that pretty much answer the question? |

It does for me... but obviously not everyone.

I really like the idea! For all the same reasons stated. |

I SO wanna see those validation originals you're talking about, now! In the Before/After threads, it seems like they're all pretty decent, but.... |

Sounds like a great idea, I'd love to see them prove the mass wrong.

Anyone can edit. It takes a good eye to capture an image exactly as the mind sees it. As a new member, I am frankly distressed to see how heavily some lean on PS, PSP or some other program to manufacture their vision. |

Good Eye + Good Equipment + Ability to control Good Equipment + A Blessing or sometimes a miracle...
+ [Back in the day a] Good Photo Lab because it never quite came out of the camera just right. Many of us were never quite aware of how much help we got from our photo lab. Most professionals were painfully aware, because a good photo lab came at a high price.

I wish I could edit. I could only use photoshop to its 5% capabilities.

Agree. In fact it good eye to spot correct moment to capture.

This is debatable.
But I could tell you that nobody will come to you to force you to use photoshop. You could all your life live without even touching any photo editing software. And you are free to do what you chose. But then so are others and I think they need freedom to do what they like. Without having to justify.

Here, you'd be surprised at what you think is post-processing might be just a good dose of in-camera know how or just good lighting, or creativity. Shannon ( scalvert) is a ribbon hog that doesn't require heavy PSing on his photos in order to collect bunches of ribbons. Frankly, I'm more awed by his creative genius than his use of Photoshop. Although he certainly uses the tool when needed.
