One of my buddies (who bought a 40D after using mine) asked me about a set of filters on eBay for his wide angle lens. To me, they appear really cheap. What's your thought on these?

On the plus side, he can buy the damned set and if they turn out to be crap he's lost almost nothing. $17 bucks plus $5 bucks shipping, he's out $22 is all. On the negative side, I don't see how they CAN be any good at that price, though you never know. From the images, they seem to be VERY thick filters, so depending what "WA" lens he is using, they may very well vignette. I'm sure they'll vignette on the 10-22mm range, for example. Maybe not on the 17-40mm range, I donno.

My gut reaction is, he should save his money and invest in a good, low profile polarizing filter. The FD filter is basically useless for digital, we have WB adjustment. I never use UV filters myself, I just take care of my lenses. I suppose if I regularly shot in, say, blowing-sand situations I'd use a UV filter, but I don't like to expose my camera to that stuff, I don't want grit creeping into it, so I don't have to worry about my front lens element getting abraded.

Thanks, Robert. I have similar thoughts as you. This guy bought an "L" lens and then he wants to skimp on the filter? I haven't figured him out. :-(

He has the "EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM" lens.
