Hey everyone,
Here in the next 6 or 7 months, I'm going to be looking to upgrade from the old D50, mostly for high ISO usability. I've always kind of assumed i would upgrade to the D200, but lately I have looked at the D80, which seems to be a pretty nice camera, and much cheaper. One thing about the D200 that i had heard is that the noise capabilities were pretty lousy, but reading on the D80 it seemed that the newer processor seemed to work pretty well with High iso (such as 1600) which i would like to be able to use. The D50 gets pretty lousy up at 1600. Just wondering if any of you D80 (and D200) users had input on how your iso handled.

Appreciate it,
Ryan

Might wait to see if this comes true.

I think the Nikon system is the best there is, but if high ISO performance is your top priority I'd go to Canon with one of their CMOS sensored cameras. Or I've heard good things about the D300's high ISO performance, but you'll spend more $$$.

That being said you could just get a tripod. High ISO means nothing to me, I just wish Nikon would lower the base ISO from 100 to 50 or even 25.

Well I need the faster shutterspeed, for shooting sports indoors, that is the only time i would use it.

Hell yeah. I get stuck on that often too, except the D50 base ISO is 200. I'd love to go to ISO 50.

Well I haven't noticed anything with noise on the D200, but the highest ISO I've shot with is 800 so far.

I had also looked at the D80- basically came down to this- lots of plastic parts, versus mostly metal. Went with the metal.

i am not sure how the noise is on the D300 and on the canons, but yeah the noise at 3200 with the D200 is pretty bad, i mean if your main subject has more light on him than the rest, you might be able to pull it off, maybe i 'll try to post some shots once i get home tonight. i 've had good shots at 1600 and 3200 and some others just bad. oh and it also depends on what type of processing you want to do with them (processing wise)

this shot was taken with iso 3200 and an aperture of 4, natural light from window.
some neat image, and some photoshop you can barely see the noise.

The D80 is an amazing camera, and so is the D200. the d200 is much more rugged and suited to outdoor landscape explorations. The noise in both is the same. (both very usable at iso 1600).

Really, both camera's are becoming outdated. I'd wait for a d80 upgrade, or save up for the d300.

Just noticed you already have a d50. I'd definitely wait for a d80 upgrade, it's completely pointless to upgrade to an outdated camera. The d50 is a great camera in it's own rights and should serve you well for a few more months. The price difference between the d80 and the d90 shouldn't be very extreme anyway.

Save save save for the D300 if you are wanting great noise reduction. I can't tell you how amazing the noise is on this camera. Do a search for sample photos on the net and you will truly be amazed.

I had the D80 and LOVED my camera - but upgraded in November to the D300 and it is like night and day. Keep in mind, I really loved my D80 but the D300 is not even in the same ballpark.

The D90 will almost certainly use the same sensor design as the D300 and will have the same noise improvements. As the D70 was to the D100 and the D80 to the D200, the D90 should be to the D300.

I agree the D90 will emulate in part the D300 with a lesser build on the body and some tweaks in other compromises but probably at a considerable savings.
