With the 450D upgraded to this spec, Canon's gotta upgrade the 5D as well, surely?

Can you just imagine the knot in your stomach if you dropped that thing?!? (I broke my 70-200 f/2.8L IS and I know how I felt when that happened)

Id be more worried about my busted foot :)

There are rumors floating around that an announcement will be made today. If they put all those goodies in the 450, I can't wait to see what they did to the 5D.

Yes I thought about that too but am still interested in it and it seems like now memory cards are so cheap now, but the new battery thing hmm hopefully sterlingtek will have them up on their website soon. It looks like thats a totally new battery cause I dont seem them on sterlingteks website I can get them cheap their....well thats if I decide to get this camera.

I hope so, but I gave up on trying to figure out Canon's release schedule a long time ago.

It's about buttons and build for me... although the build (materials) seems to be better on the 450D (Edit: than previous rebels). The rebel line still uses those goofy < > buttons.

At this point I don't think I would fair well without the Thumb dial and joystick that my 20D/40D have. Every time that someone hands me a rebel I have to take the cam from my eye to make adjustments, my cams I don't. I guess I could learn the positions but give me a thumb dial any day.

As to SD, whatever...would keep me in the x0D line as long as they stayed with CF.

Liveview, I have tried it on the 40D and that got a whatever from me as well. Keep in mind I don't shoot flowers or studio portraits either where liveview make actually be useful.

It's useless for macro, IMO. I gave it a go in the studio and noticed 2 things. One, it apparently stops down the lens and does give you a VERY accurate (if perhaps exaggerated) DOF preview. However, you can't fire a flash! So lock everything down, turn off live view, take a shot (perhaps with mirror lock up...more time needed to change settings, then shoot w/ flash)

Fuji has also announced a very impressive looking large sensor superzoom at about the same price, the S100FS. Could be a good upgrade from my small sensor S5. I'll be reading the reviews on both. Depends on if one wants the SLR ability to change lenses, or the all in one convenience. (I know the true SLR goes over better here, though!)

It did seem fast to me also that this one came out. But for 800 bucks looks like you getting a nice little camera... so now I have to decide if I want this one or get the 40D. hmmm the decisions and then its rumored that a 40D replacement maybe coming now...

I'm hoping for a 40D price drop. Build quality, larger viewfinder and dual thumbwheels are still attractive.

There won't be a 40D replacement and the price has already dropped some (to about 1250 body only).

The only bodies not replaced in the past year by canon are the 400 and 5D. Rumours of a 3000D limited feature dSLR have been around a long time, so it's always a maybe. A 5D Mk2 and a 7D are rumoured...a 5D with essentially the 16mp sensor that was in the old 1Ds, and a 7D with a 12 or 14mp FF sensor to slot in between the $1200 40D and $2400 5D, or maybe in between the $2400 5D and $4500 1d3.

I'd like to see a EF-S 50-150 2.8 IS and a 24-70 2.8 IS, and maybe a good 18-200 IS as well.

The 40D body did drop $150 recently - went from $1299 to $1149 at B&H.

I'd bet they won't announce a 5D replacement today - why steal the 450D thunder?

So does anybody have a good link to a technical piece on how many megapixels will outresolve a lens or will be equivalent to 35mm film? I see a bunch, but they were all written in 2005. I'm looking for something recent.

I'd like to see a 16MP 5D mk II with Digic III. The rest is fluff.

Ya know, with the 450D spec'd up that high... it's gonna make a lot of 5D owners feel the need to upgrade :-D "My Rebel has just as many MPs as your 5D" :-D Wouldn't that just rub some 5D owners the wrong way... oh yeah, I believe Canon knows exactly what it is doing. :-D

Well, assuming the photosites don't shrink, the camera is still FF, and Digic III implies 14-bit, then I agree with you. =)

They picked SD over Compact Flash as the storage format.

Edit: Guess they did that to make it less of a barrier to get people to upgrade from P&S.

What are you talking about? Do you mean to say that this new camera has a better spot meter than the 40D? According to my manual, the 40D's spot meter is "weighted at the center covering about 3.8% of the viewfinder area."

This new camera's spot meter covers 4% (according to DPReview).

0.2%? Is that really all you've got???
01/24/2008 02:22:38 PM · #43
Perhaps he was merely saying that having spot-metering at all makes this camera an upgrade (with the other features) over the 40D even though it is in a lower line? Canon's entry-level line has never had spot-metering previously and so would be a selling feature for the 40D line.

After reading all the info on it, I am leaning towards this direction also...

Exactly! That why it doesn't "kill" the 40D, as stated earlier.

It's not going to kill the 40D for at least one reason:

New REBEL: Continuous shooting at 3.5fps for up to 53 JPEG (6 RAW)

40D: Continuous shooting at 6.5fps for up to 75 JPEG (17 RAW)

pentamirror vs pentaprism is a biggie too...

$5,999 for 200mm?
They know where they can stick that.
It wont be lead based glass either and for less then that price you can get a pristine 200mm F1.8 L
Sorry Canon, even with IS that price tag is unjustified.
01/24/2008 06:30:09 PM · #50
That 450 comes pretty close. Close enough to give pause for many 40d shoppers, no matter what u 40d owners think. But when it comes down to it 6.7fps, pentamirror and even the magnesium alloy among other things give the 40d a comfortable lead. I'll probably still go 40d mostly because of that FPS and i still cant get used to that small rebel body.

Marketingwise I dont understand why they bumped up the 450 like that, so soon after the 40d release. Such is the nature of the rebel i guess :)
