A fair number of people seem to be confused by what "Exclusive" means for the Exclusive Open challenges. Can anyone suggest a better name for these challenges that better conveys that you can only enter one or the other? The only constraint is that space is limited, so the name can't be very much longer than it is. Otherwise, have at it.

Well, Exclusive Open is a bit of an oxymoron. I'd say we go with "Choice of Open challenges" |

I would just drop the word "open" and call them Exclusive Challenges. Once you submit to one then the other isn't open to you and I think that's where the confusion lies. Just my guess anyway. |

I kind of like cryingdragon's idea, "Choice of Open Challenges". Another idea could be a site design change. Put the two open challenges in their own distinguishable box, apart from the other challenges, and maybe have a radio button where you choose one or the other to submit to rather than having the text links for both.

Site design change is ideal, but Langdon is backed up. I'm hoping for something that doesn't involve code changes.
The word "Open" is necessary to distinguish from "Member". Though we've never done it, an Exclusive Member Challenge is technically possible.

I like Yanko's idea of dropping the 'open' part. Y'all specify member-only challenges by designating them 'member challenge' - I think we can assume that if it isn't a 'member challenge' than it's not exclusive to members only.
Otherwise, I like "choice of one - open challenge" or "pick one open challenge". |

Would it be difficult to put a short note in the 'Challenge' section, like right above the listed Opens, something like- 'Users/Members may submit to only one of the two available Open Challenges.'?

Just a thought...
Does it really help to have two? In the end there are still as many entries and basically we go tearing through challenge ideas more quickly.
Why not try a week or two with only one and see if voter turnout is affected? If so,we might consider a limit of some sort ... and NO placeholder images, if you pull or change your image, no soup for you!
Simple fix, saves on confusion...

Some words from the thesaurus...
choice, independent, limited |

Exclusive really needs to say 'mutually exclusive' for preciseness. Notwithstanding, many may mistake 'exclusive' for fancy.
'Open' suggests anyone can enter anything.
'Choice of non-member challenges' gets rid of the misleading terms 'open' and 'exclusive'.
'Restricted' would be ok but it sounds kind of negative.
And, cross-posting with trevytrev - the 'Either-Or' challenge may be the most practical/effective name. Or maybe the 'Take your Pick' challenge.

What is the point in having to pick? Why not just let them both be open? Seems to me that would solve the problem at hand. |

True, excepts for the most dedicated shooters or shoehorners... it would be self limiting to a point.

The original point was to keep the number of entries per challenge at a reasonable level. At the time of the split, 500 entries in an open challenge was not uncommon.

The challenge history is showing that's not too much of a threat right now. And, I'm thinking not everyone (probably most) has time to shoot for both.

Is the original point still a valid issue?
