Sorry, this may not even belong here, but I figure there are so many knowledgeable people here so I'd like to ask. I'm selling a lens through ebay, but someone asked me for a serial # and date code. Why do they need to know that, and if there is any harm giving them that info? Thanks for your input!

Post the serial # with the last two digits as XX's which should be close enough for a buyer who is interested in the specific build of the lens.
Here is a link to get the date code; Dating Canon Lenses
Hope that this will help you get the sale price that you want.

I've never understood the hesitancy in listing the serial numbers. I sell a lot of equipment on ebay (user name macornothing), and list serial numbers all the time. It is useful info, which helps potential buyers research and know exactly what they are getting. The only reason not to list it is if you think its stolen property or your trying to mislead potential buyers into buying a different version, era, etc.

Here is an example of a lens I sold last month.

I think listing the serial # is a good idea to protect the seller also...no buyer doing a switch on you for a refund.
