My girlfriend has SBC Yahoo DSL internet service. a few months ago I bought a Linksys Wireless-B Network Kit for Notebooks (Model: W11S4PC11) and a second Wireless B network card for my laptop.

I got it all hooked up and working and its been great.

However occosianlly she can NOT connect to the internet. That SBC Yahoo DSL connection manager does not find the network and she gets a little ffrustrated, especially when I am right next to her and I can connect with NO problems. Sometimes we both can not connect.

I have tried all the help files and configuration suggestions on the SBC Yahoo DLS site, but it still acts up every now and then.

Typically I unplug and power off every thing and wait a few minutes and then hook it all back up and it works great for days/ weeks....

any Ideas????

Thanks

James

It's possible that the ISP (the company providing the service, SBC) is checking the MAC address of the router and finding it different from the MAC address of the DSL modem itself. Your Linksys router should be able to 'clone' a MAC address. In my experience this is fairly well-documented in the Linksys manuals.

MAC addresses have nothing to do with Mac (Macintosh/Apple) computers. They are unique netowrk identifiers attached to all networking devices. Many broadband ISPs check the MAC address of their cable modem or DSL modem to make sure their service isn't being stolen. I have to clone the MAC address of my cable modem onto my Linksys router to get it to work reliably.

I thought i told the lynksys to clone the DSL modem MAC address.

I will tripple check that setting tonight when I get over there....

My set up at my home works well with ZERO prolems, but with out the wireless bit.

I have an SMC router on my cable modem and 3 PC's share the connection....

so im sure SBC Yahoo DSL is checking something.... we will see after I play with the settings tonight

Have you called SBC yahoo DSL tec support?

Do you have all of the SBC software loaded on the machine, e.g. the "enternet 300, etc.?
If so, contact SBC and ask them to walk you through setting up with no software loaded to your local machines. Your Linksys router should make the pppoe connection.
I have three machines connecting thru my Linksys router, with no SBC software loaded on them. One runs XP Pro, another Wink, and last Win98.

For WindowsXP you have to start both machines at same time turn on the connection wizards and connect both computers BEFORE you open any Explorer browsers on any machine!

Ok looks like all is working now.

I took her laptop off the wireless (she never moves the thing) and I conected her straight to the Lynksys router.

I cloned the MAC address and made a few other changes and looks like all is well. My lap top is running just fine on the wireless also.

Both laptops are fairly new and running WinXP. I keep both up to date, since Im the computer geek of the 2 of us.

I do believe that all her SBC Yahoo DSL software is installed and working properly on her laptop.

I just rebooted her laptop and it found the internet right away....

hopefully i fixed it...

Another thing you might want to do is visit the Lynksys web site to see if there are any firmware upgrades. I had somewhat similar issues that were resolved by upgrading my firmware.

a friend of mine had a similar issue with the same hardware

two things
one - was networking win98 with win XP - no fix found
two - someone in the building was taping into their connection with a wireless card

we had to block his MAC address to free up the 2 user router limit

be sure to secure the wireless hardware
