An SLR would not nessesaraly improve that picture. Even with an very fast (VERY expensive!) telephoto lens you might not be able to get both the truck and background frozen at the same time.
Look into "Panning Technique". Panning is where you pan (move) the camera with your moving subject, so that it is still in the frame and the background is motion blured. Either with your P&S or an SLR, that would probably be your best bet for the kind of shot you are looking for. There are lots of tutorials explaining panning on the internet (Google "photography technique panning")...but really, it takes a LOT practace and a bit of luck to get it right.

I see you shot was taken at:
ISO 100
f/3.5
1/30th
at a zoom of 120mm
Not a bad picture at all. You should of up'ed the ISO 200 or 400 and it would of given you a faster shutter speed. Would of increased noise but that could be improved with NI or NN.

I did have the luxury of shooting that one outdoors (almost too much light)
Where you shooting these Dave? I'm think I either missed the monster trucks here in San Dag this weekend or they are here next.
Nice shots you got there, colors are great. (but it is easier with an SLR)
ED: to swap user name for real name.

This is a staged photo. The car actualy hangin in the air suspended with fishing strings, and everyone else is standing still for 2 seconds shot. |

I got this one at the monster truck show here in Miami last year. I had rented at Canon 28-300 IS USM L piece of glass for another event that weekend. I definately had to pan some of these to keep the focus tight. The only other problem I had was getting in with "Professional" equipment, but I talked to the head of my gate and told him all the shots were for my 2 kids that were with me; and he let us go.

With that much light I think any camera could have managed a fast enough shutter. Night time under stadium lights is a bit different. (I beleive that was the case for the original pic in the thread)

Great action shot! That is one pricy piece of glass (~$2500)! But the f/3.5-5.6 apature is not super fast...possibly slower at the nessesary zoom than the P&S (the original pic was F/3.5 at 120mm). The SLR and $$$ lense will have focusing advantages, quicker shutter response and lower noise at higher ISO...the lens IS might help too...but for this kind of shot IMO technique and skill make more of a difference than the equipment.
