| I can't seem to find out the exact salary, apparently they don't get paid as much as people think. But even if I was paid 40,000 a year, I would do it in a heartbeat (unless i had a family) |

I just did a quick google search of "National Geographic Photographer Salary" and found this from 2003
"Dear Micheal:
The salary of a photographer at National Geographic Magazine is about $7-9,000 a year. Very low because we use foreign people from poor countries to do our labor for cheap. If you are willing to work for this low pay, we will hire you. Just email me back. Phillip G. Oswell President of National Geographic Magazine

yeah I saw that. It was a joke post :p
If you read the whole letter, it said we buy cheap labour from foreign photographers or something. |

They didn't say what he was paid, but I saw a PBS documentary on NG photographer Joel Sartore that went into great detail on how hard he worked and the sacrifices he had to make. It did a lot to convince me I didn't want to be a NG photographer, no matter what it paid. (There were parts about having to lie in puddles of his own urine for a shot...)
Art Wolfe seems to have it much better as chronicled in "Travels to the Edge". I'd much rather have his job!
