I'm not trying to sound TOO whiny here but I, as a mere non-paying non-member, would really like a crack at an Advanced editing challenge under the new rules! I was bursting to see what the challenge was going to be today under the false hope that at least one of them MUST be advanced. Alas they are both basic again this week... :-(

So that's my suggestion for a future challenge, albeit a modest one, for the cheapskates (read: students) to have a go at advanced editing. Before I burst.

How about just paying the $5 rate and upgrading your membership for a single month so you can enter it? That might be a good compromise until you can manage the full fee. (Speaking of which, I need to pay for a year and get off the month to month myself. I think I've proven to myself it is something I will make plenty of use of)

I have an idea. Stop worring about PS editing and worry about taking good photographs. it will take you a lot further. Don't worry about ribbons concentrate on composition, subject, lighting, etc. Just my opinion.

With two 6+ scores in his first 4 entries, I think he's proven he can take a good photo. That said, I agree there's a lot to be learned even within the Basic editing challenges. Knowing you can't 'fix it in the mix' forces careful attention to detail before clicking the shutter, and that can't help but improve your photography.

Jimi, to answer your original question, Open challenges under Advanced are very rare, and are generally considered a benefit of membership.

I really don't think scores on this site relate to good photography, although the winning entries are nice, I find almost every time that the really good, creative, imagineative photos place way down on the list.

I completely agree that this site is very much a learning experience in terms of taking great shots in camera, and I have learned an awful lot in the time that I've been on this site, I'm just excited to have a go at the new rules :-p

It may well be time for me to dig deep and actually buy a membership (i'll have to live off baked beans for a week - doable)!

@ClubJuggle - Legend, thank you so much, I just blushed a little bit.

@iamkmaniam - I do agree with you mate, on two counts; a) It is extremely beneficial to think about those things before you start messing about with the shot and b) I too have noticed that some extremely imaginative and clever shots don't always score up that well. I personally put this down to interpretation most of the time - people don't always see the same thing in shots. However I do think that the scoring system is very fair and evenly judged on this site in general!

Just a quick newbie-style question, if I get a membership can I enter more than one challenge per week?

Yes. As a member, you can enter the member's challenge and one of the open challenges each week (plus any extra challenges that may be running)

I think you'll find that the best photographers have an Avg Vote Received: 5.7420.

That gives me hope!

To be fair about it, you have to have an image with broad appeal to score high here, a mid score does not necessarily indicate a poor shot. I got two comments on my rivers entry, both addressing the same characteristic of my photo. One said it detracted from the image and the other really liked it. This is what scores here are dealing with. It's a game and a learning experience, don't get too wrapped up in it.

I try to score a shot mostly on how good it is, though some personal liking surely comes into it. I think some others may score strictly on their personal preference for it, as evidenced by ribbon winners that always seem to get some 1's and 2's somehow. Just my theory.
