I know this is a site for amateurs but I also know that several people have mentioned getting paid for photosessions. I'm starting to get some questions about doing photo shoots for individuals and I don't know how to setup a fee structure. Does anyone on here have any suggestions for a tyro that is considering a part-time gig. Do you charge a small amount for your time and then some per print or just per print or just for your time? Help!?!?

Thanks,

Kev

I have the same questions!

I've sold a couple of prints now, and just had my irony shot chosen to be used in a College Developmental Reading course.

If your beginning, it's bad but adjust your prices to what the company is worth. If you were to shoot some veg for a local greengrocers charge little, but if the local TV company wanted a shot, you would be able to charge more.

You also need to consider how long they intend to use the image, how big it will be printed, whether you'll be credited, if they want full rights, if it's used in advertising - display etc, if they use it online or in print blah blah blah.

Get all you can and good luck! (ps: have a base rate too for your time and knowledge, that way if they don't like your pics. you still get paid)

If the pros have critiques, I will listen to them respectfully. This is what I do....I shoot lots of photos for a local motorcycle group and for them I recover all costs (film, developing, printing, inks, paper, flash cards, etc.). My time I donate as an officer. 5x7 reprints are $5 and 8x10 are $10. Reprint w/ frame is reprint price ($5 or $10) plus cost of frame plus 25%. At a local watering hole a small group of revelers wanted a photo. $5 for a single 4x6. 36 pictures at a biker wedding was $75. No album. A local band wants promotional material. I charge cost plus an hourly rate. If I develop and print the promo pictures then I will give them a package price. Cost plus % for "X" number of photos. If I get to be a recognizable name and am in demand, then I will charge what the market will bear. There are lots of good photographers around. Just look at the pictures on this site. With the saturation of digital cameras and computers, everyone is their own photographer. For someone to pay you for taking their pictures, there must be a need and a percieved value. Your job is to sell the need and provide the value.
