Is very interested in photography. She is 11, wants to 'be like mom', & enter challenges. While on a google search, dpc came up. I'm not so sure about her entering here..since it can be harsh! However, I have yet to find a site that seems trustworthy, free, or age appropriate. Does anyone have any ideas?

Jen, this site is pretty much age friendly. The most age friendly site I have been on. However there are a few minor altercations in which I would no want my 11 year old in or reading. But you can monitor her usage and what she see's because you are on DPC as well.
However my kid is 19 now....

Some of the challenges can be a little hard, but with you coaching her im sure she can do well here.

YOu just have to make sure you dont take or let your daughter take comments on her images too personaly. Some of the harsher comments I have gotten I feel have helped me the most, Vs. all the COOL shot, nicely done comments.

Sign her up and let her give it a try...its free, what can you lose..

Good Luck

You'll have to mail DPC a copy of a "waiver" letter since she's under 13. It basically says that you understand that this is a site not "intended" for kids (i.e., there may be limited nudity or other age-inappropriate images), and taking responsibility for that.

Otherwise, have her get started. She's old enough to understand that when people comment on her photos, they don't know who she is, and can't mean anything personally. Also, that there's a wide variety of opinion, and that the "best" pictures are often those which inspire significant pro and con reactions.

My son Isaac submits here occasionally, although he's lost a bit of interest since I got him his own camera, since it doesn't have a zoom lens -- he's back to borrowing mine for now. I think it's a great activity to share with your kids, and touches on all of the important aspects of education --language, math, science, creative thought, and psychology.

Here's the text of the waiver for you to adapt. Send a note to the admins (Help>Contact) to get the address to mail/fax a printed copy.

"I authorize my daughter/son, _____________, to participate on the web site //www.dpchallenge.com.

I am agreeing to the Terms of Use (found at //www.dpchallenge.com/terms.php) for her/him, since she/he is underage.

I will be held liable for any actions that she/he takes on the web site."

The age cuttoff for registration is 13. This is necessary for COPPA compliance.

Do you mean that kids under 13 can not be registrated on this page although you have a parential permission?
If so I think it´s a same. I compleatly agree with GeneralE that this is a great thing for kids to do, educating and lifts their spirit. Wish I´ve got into something like that when I was around 10, think at least that I would have much better photograper to day than I am and probably ever will be.
