Could any SONY Cybershot or F717 owners help me with a senior moment...I cannot remember how to disable the flash and I know there is a way. I need to turn it really off for an event where flash is not allowed - I know how to turn it off obviously, but it kicks in anyway if it feels the need. I had it disabled at the Olympics but can't find "how to" in manuals. Thanks.

On the 4 way toggle button there is a flash icon next to the top button. Press it and on the viewfinder you will see that the Flash icon will appear, not appear (auto) or appear with a line through it (off).

On my camera it's a separate button with a "flash" sign on it. Push for red eye, flash, or no flash.

Thanks all...I know to do that but there is a way to really disable it so that I don't get evicted from the arena for having the flash pop up and , well, flash........

I think the only other way is taking the camera apart but I wouldn't do it ;).

When it is on no flash it will never flash (or should never flash)

...or cover the flash with duct tape. Stick it on your pants so it picks up a tiny bit of lint to keep it from getting to sticky and stick it on the flash. Otherwise like Ram21 said. It shouldn't flash.

I meant electrical tape but for some strange reason I typed "duct tape". "Electrical tape" shouldn't leave as much sticky residue compared to "duct tape".

or use see through color tapes and you can get some cool lighting effects from the flash.

If you turn the flash "off," it won't flash. that's all. You won't get evicted, it won't flash. Just turn it to off. That's the symbol with the line throught it. Off. No flash, just off.

Thanks again to all....I am preparing my duck tape suit and I will just abort the shot if it pops up because it really does even when the flash is "off".

I appreciate all the feedback but I do want to say that I have been at events where people have been escorted out or where their cameras have been removed. So....below is the information I was looking for if anyone else would like it as well.

You need to go to the Setup and then Camera2 and then Hot Shoe and toggle it to On. That will disable / turn off the internal flash. If you don̢۪t mount an external flash or have the external flash turned off, it won̢۪t fire.

Anne,

The flash pops up only when you have it in Auto (AF) mode. If you put it in P, and turn off the flash it will stay off.

Anne - if all the previous tips fail then your camera is probably faulty, so try this.

1. Place the camera under a single, 3-ply sheet of tissue paper
2. Strike the top of the camera with a mallet
3. Pick up the camera (tidying away any loose elements)
4. Attempt to take a picture with flash
5. If flash fires repeat steps 1 and 2 until satisfied

This should render the flash inert and unable to place you in jeopardy during any sensitive flash-photography scenarios. Do remember that it is possible that this may void your warranty and could lead to some more complex problems, if not undertaken with precision. ;)

Jon - thanks for the first sensible straightforward directions I have gotten - does it matter if the tissue paper is colored?
All kidding aside - the directions with the hot shoe work just fine as I thought I made clear so I am all set.
