In Photoshop CS3, there is an option to "Deactivate..." under the Help menu.

If you click on it you get this: "Deactivating this software will allow you to install and activate Adobe Photoshop CS3 on another computer. Deactivation requires an Internet connection and cannot be cancelled once started." Then there is a checkbox option allowing you to "Erase my serial number from this computer after deactivation completes. I will reenter it if I decide to reactivate later. (You may want to do this if you are giving this computer, but not the software, to another person.)"

I'm concerned about this now because my laptop failed recently and I'm unable to start it in order to deactivate Photoshop. My new laptop is due to arrive today and I'll be wanting to install my Photoshop CS3 on it.

I did go ahead and install the same license of Photoshop on my PC at work just after it was released for purchase. Both copies have been updating themselves since then, no problemo. I figured each license would be allowed at least two installs to cover PC and laptop, but admit I didn't read the rules.

Does anybody know if I'll run into difficulties installing and activating it on my new laptop? Being the malcontent I am, I'm more interested in the practicalities than the legalities. :-P

I've had several machines die on me this past year... each time, without having had the chance to deactivate Photoshop first. (like that would ever happen)

Just call Adobe's Tech Support and they'll ask you a bunch of questions and give you a new number to reactive Photoshop on another computer. (have your serial number handy)

P.S.
You get TWO activations anyway... so if you haven't already used up both activations, you can still activate Photoshop without having to call them.

Good news: It's true, you're allowed to have PS CS3 installed on TWO machines (not running at the same time, though). Bad news: as long as the laptop copy is not deactivated, you won't be able to install it on your new one (unless you go through the deactivating process at the Adobe Hotline - good luck!)

WOW!

I found a customer service phone number at the Photoshop website, called it and was speaking to a human after just one, short menu! I told her my situation and she said go ahead and install it on my laptop, then phone 866-772-3623 after I get an error message about too many activations. They'll give me a code to enter and I'm golden. Open 24-7.

:-)

Thanks folks!
