Push it further...IMHO.
It's not DPC friendly...but it's not for a Challenge either. So WTF!
I'd even blow out the Whisky bottle and the glass. Make it eye shattering and a dirty ashtray would be the cherry on top.

Those pictures are beautiful, and he is a great photographer with a huge talent for noir thirties-esque b/w portraits, but that has to be the most difficult and unintuitive website ever. :-P
fixed link stoopid monkey

Wouldn't this be a good challenge topic? Someone should suggest it. All the challenges I suggest never see the light of day...

There are good sample images there. Contrasty, low key images...not super sharp.
When I hear Noir, I think Bogart...The Maltese Falcon...dark alley's...docks...but there's more to it than that, of course.
I intially shot this scene with Noir in mind but nearly froze to death and split before it got dark and moody. I don't generally shoot posed images but this would be great in the rain with a guy lighting a cigarette under those lamps with a long shadow. |

I suggested it a while ago, and I believe Judy jutilda suggested sometime before I did.
I wonder wonder wonder why ... it's not be a go, c'mon Langdon - let us explore our noir side!
Great photos cindi - you're still my hero :) |

Black on Black a pretty good dpc challenge but mostly without the cinematic connotation of Film Noir. Cindi seems to want to emphasize that aspect.
I like the color shown by pawdrix, it emphasizes some more range to what might be possible.
Some lists of historical Film Noir motion pictures also include a few color, most notably mentioned is the 1981 film "Body Heat", however there are a few other color films listed from the mostly b&w 40-50's noir hayday. |

Sin City, Dick Tracy(?), LA Confidential, China Town, Road To Perdition...
Noir yet colorful.
Good idea but the Challenge description needs to clearly be inclusive of more contemporary (colorful) takes on the concept. Just say it...no tricky, confusing language.
Sounds like a good way to have an interesting Challenge and maybe broaden things to the point where there won't be 100 images of people smoking cigarettes in lingerie.
It'll be fun.

For a good example of color noir you can't beat Robert Altman's "The Long Goodbye" from 1973. Elliot Gould as Phillip Marlowe in a pastel LA that is just as hard and gritty as any of the old black and white noirs going. Great film with some pretty awesome cinematography. The film has recently been restored and was touring the art theater circuit here for awhile. |

Been watching this thread to see how your vision progressed.
I think one simple fix is all you need Cindy.
In all b&w movies like the ones Bogey made, had one thing in common. Atmosphere.
Atmosphere is what you need to give a more Noir feel.
Atmosphere??
Smoke, moisture, or dust. Smoke is preferred for indoor shots. A wet down for out door stuff. Dust for old schoolers that don't care for your health.
Don't believe me, don't understand, need more proof? Rent a classic movie.

Do photos that fall into the Noir Genre have to be B&W? This is just a snap shot taken at a bowling birthday party and no amount of editing could change it into anything else but I thought it had that "Noir" feel to it. I've never really enjoyed the Noir Genre until recently - I think it's strange that it is now starting to appeal to me.
I'm really curious is Noir MUST be black and white.

No noir can be in color. There are many modern versions of Noir.
I took the liberty of doing a quick edit to make it a little darker in feel.

Yeah, it can be color or partially desaturated or sepia or whatever... just needs to have that dark edgy look about it.
