"There's something in the air" according to the Apple website; //www.apple.com/
Rumoured to be some kind of ultraportable Macbook; //blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/01/breaking-macboo.html |

I went to four (1-SF, 2-Boston, 1-DC) back in the late 80's - early 90's. They are pretty cool.

| Or will Apple announce a deal with the Beatles today to get their catalog on iTunes (to be followed in a few weeks by all the other online music stores)? |

Love my Macs and had high hopes for a small form factor ultraportable, but I don't really get this. Was hoping for a Mac version of something like the Toshiba Libretto, but this seems like just a slightly thinner and much more expensive MacBook.
Pretty much the same external dimensions of the MacBook and only another 1/4 inch thin, 3lbs versus 5lbs (MacBook), no dvd drive, no firewire connection, only one usb connection, $700 more than the base MacBook, $500 more than the top-end MacBook (not counting the $200 "black premium"), slower processor speeds even on the $3000 version so the photography stuff I run would be dog slow, and you have to pay even more for the cool features - like the flash-based hard drive - on the lower-end model.
To me, because the external dimensions are virtually unchanged, this really isn't that much more portable than the MacBook. The two pounds less might make a big difference to some people, but it doesn't seem significant to me. While it's nice to have a full-size keyboard, I really don't envision my own usage of this type of computer as a full-time typing machine.
Really what I'm looking for is not something that I would I want something that has a large enough screen that I can comfortably surf the web, review photographs downloaded from my camera for initial culling and light editing only, and that will let me watch DVDs or listen to music. Also a DVD burner so that I can back up photos "on location" is a must.
Seems like they are hoping this will sell on "cool factor" alone. Maybe they are right, but I think that they are really missing the boat by not selling a small form factor Mac (~10 inch screen, ~ 80% sized keyboard, DVD drive/burner built in, 1 to 1 & 1/2 inch thin, ~3lbs). As long as they kept the processor speeds decent, I'd pay a premium for that type of computer and I think the similar ones that Sony and IBM have been selling says that other people are in the market for similar stuff too.
For now, I guess I should thank Apple for saving me money. |

The more interesting announce to me is Time Capsule. An AirPort Extreme base station with a built in 500GB or 1 TB drive that works with Time Machine to backup all the Macs in on your network wirelessly with 802.11n.
Very cool.
Apple TV 2 looks pretty good too.

I dont like it at all, that much money and no firewire only one usb and no ethernet port... an apple wants 1799 for one model and then 3000 for another plus you have to pay for the remote. Not even a superdrive
Nope I am not going to upgrade to that from my MacBook. Also too the specs on that new toy of apples are nothing for me to make the jump.
Is it just me or was that a boring show for Apple. Not much big items or must haves mentioned and no upgrade the iPhone just software updates... well i guess I still am not getting a iPhone.

$1000 to upgrade the 1.8" 80GB drive (4500 RPM) to the 64GB solid state drive, wow!
Definitely not for everyone. |

Hey, guys, this wasn't designed for photographers! It's more of a Mac for traveling executives. Certainly more cool factor than the equally expensive and impractical competition. Actually, the Mac is more practical because of the full-size keyboard and the stroke-sensing touchpad.
I'm sure they won't have any trouble selling tons of these, just not that many to people who frequent dpchallenge. |

For those that either don't want Apple or want something a bit smaller, the UMPC has been around for a couple of years now.
Again, these aren't for serious photographers, but more for the mobile executive.
