Is there anything that will improve this picture or make it semi okay?

Might be interesting to see what impact tonemapping and/or HDR could do for it. Do you have photomatix?

might have some trouble because the monkey doesn't appear to be in focus, but then, what do I know?

Photomatix has a free trial download. Another consideration is to contact Simms, he has a beta HDR program you could probably get from him.

Well, sometimes when I have a subject that's slightly soft, I add a soft glowy photoshop action (like a gothic glow) at a low opacity, and then erase a little over the subject to make it pop. And soft burning in the dark parts can help it look like there's more sharpness and definition.

I played with it really quick. I don't know if you like those suggestions, but here's what it would look like:

I love the photo, Urfa! What a treat to see one like that in the wild!!!

I'm not on a calibrated monitor, so I am not sure of the contrast and colors, but I wanted to minimize the flash on the lower thirds.

I made the monkey stand out a little bit more with lucis. The background was pretty much unchanged except for a touch of saturation added.

That's a nice approach Sandy. Have to tuck that one away for future reference. :-)
