Hey Guys,

My wife and I are booking a trip in the End of November to The Marcos Island area of Florida to go to the everglades and some of the other stuff thats down there. I was wondering if anyone has any good spots for photography down there, or lived down there and potentially would want to get together and show us around a bit and to some shooting together. Any info would be great.

Thanks
Rich

Ding Darling, Sanibel Island, the 'Glades, Goodland, the Tamiami Trail, Wooten's Airboat Tours, the Miccosoukee reservation, the 'Glades, the Thousand Islands, the Isle of Capri, Naples, Fort Myers Beach, the 'Glades, Alligator Alley, Corkscrew Swamp, Miami, Everglades City, Key Biscayne, Key Largo (Esp. the Italian Fisherman.....scampi to DIE for!!!), Cape Canaveral.....

All this stuff is right around the corner or a day trip away. It kinda depends on what you want as to the kind of thing that would be the most photographic. My recommendation is to just Google most of what I listed and decide what you want to *DO*.....and just take your camera everywhere you go, and you'll be fine. There are sunrises/sunsets galore, it cuts loose with wild electrical storms over the Gulf and the 'Glades virtually every night, there are osprey nests on utility poles all through the 'Glades, birds, Birds, BIRDS, EVERY-FREAKIN'-WHERE!!!!!

And it's just such a nice place in general. Marco is quiet, which is a nice change from the hustle and bustle of Orlando, Miami, Daytona, and the really "happening" places. Two hours across Alligator Alley, and you're in Miami for all the noise, smoke, commotion, hookers, drugs, gunfire, wild cars, and overpriced eateries and shops......and then you go home at night!

That's a good time of year to be there as it's off season and though some places will not be open, Marco has such a nice quiet ambiance to it you'll really appreciate not having traffic and being able to walk into a restaurant and be seated.

Oh....a week isn't enough!

Have a blast!

Thanks Jeb,

We know a week isnt enough, we plan on comming back again at a different time of the year. Comming down at this time of the year to catch all the birds in the 'glades'. Sounds like a lot of fun, thanks for all the places to look up.

Anyone else been or live around there?

Don't forget that you might see the taping of the CBS hit show CSI Miami. :)

I don't know much about Marco but I can tell you a bit more about Sanibel Island and Captiva Islands.

Very laid back beautiful beaches and area. They are absolutely great for shelling (there are tons of shells on the beach). Generally, you can find some really nice big ones off season (summer doesn't seem to have much of the big ones).

//www.sanibel-captiva.org/
Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge, The Sanibel Lighthouse, Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum are all some cool spots to visit and see. All info about those attractions can be found at the above link.

On Sanibel Island for snacks of the ice cream and italian ices Pinocchio's Orginal Italian Ice Cream can't be beat. They make it fresh and the shop has that quaint small island feel.

On Captiva Island:
There is a bend/turnout in the road that allows you to park to watch a spectacular sunset over the gulf (lots of people turn out on that small stretch to watch and photograph)- it is right at Blind Bridge Pass I believe. I have not been able to catch it because I have either been at another location or there was bad weather.

Two eateries of interest:

The Mucky Duck Restaurant and Pub
//www.muckyduck.com/
They also have a live beach webcam so if you want to see what it looks like on the beach you can follow the link. Great seafood and good service.

These two captures I took on the beach just steps away from the Mucky Duck. It was also at that visit that we spotted two dolphins 30 feet from the shore. They stuck around to check out the crowd that was watching them (and darn it, no I forgot to pull out my camera because I was too enamored with watching them).

The Bubble Room Restaurant
//www.bubbleroomrestaurant.com/frameset.html
Extremely colorful and interesting exterior. Once you step inside the walls are COVERED with memorabilia from cartoons, movies, and toys from 1930's to present time (there is a train that travels the whole length and rooms of the restaurant). It's very eclectic but never boring and the food portions are HUGE so skip lunch and come hungry for dinner if you go here.

A quick bump to see if I can find anyone who lives down in the Marcos Island area, are hoping to be in the area in November if everything goes well the dates should be the 8th through the 15th. and I are looking for some people to go shooting with or some of the good locations down in the area.

If you live down there or have been there please chime in to this thread and let me know if you can meet up with me or the good areas to come and shoot.

Anyone who is interested, I will keep you updated to whether or not this will happen as we get closer, if there is any interest. I should know early August if it will be definate or not.

Wish I were closer. I'm about as far from there as a person could possibly be and still be in the same state. 'Bout a 6 hour drive from here, I think. :/

Hi. I live in Fort Myers which is about an hour north unless it's season then two hours :). I spend a lot of time around Everglades City and Chokoloskee and know a few spots for good photo ops (I also know the good food spots). November will be season but the bugs will be gone. I'd love to meet up if it works, since I'm a practicing artist without any responsibilities or commitments.

You are right - sorry - thought she was on the west coast. Anything south of Daytona is a different country for me.

I live at LaBelle, about 1 1/2 hr drive from Marco. There is plenty of lead time for us to arrange an afternoon or part day shoot in the local swamps if you are interested. My nephew Doug is a well known photographer from that area as well, and he lives near marco, and would probably find time to take us for a mangroves and gulf coast boating outing.
Gotta go get the pizza. More later.

I can never understand why anyone would want to visit this forsaken place during the summer. Come in fall or winter and bring a T-shirt, nicer sunsets and sunrises, nicer climate, less nuts without A/C trying to shoot at you.

November is a good time to be here for the weather if we don't have a hurricane. Sept through Dec are best for sunsets. Some of the birds will be in breeding plumage at that time too. Another fav of mine is Janes Scenic Drive. It is an improved road through mile after mile of native swamp and sawgrass land with no fences and very little traffic. It's a perfect place to do the nature photos thing, or to wade off into the marsh. I haven't been there in a long time, but I am sure that it has not changed much. The grade is on top of the road bed of an old logging railway.
I would definitely try to make it out to Clyde Butchers place at Ochopee on Hy 41. Here is a good link with lots of links in the site.

The BEST month to be in Florida is July. The water is finally warm, all the snow birds have gone north and you can go out to eat without a two hour wait.

Rich is talking about being here in late Nov in the original post. Clear days mid 70's to mid 80's daytime, and 50's to 60's at night, with light breezes, unless of course there is a hurricane, but that opens a ton of great photo ops. We rarely have a hurricane that late in the season though.
