Well that guy half you love to hate is back somewhat. I went out and bought a new camera that fits my new budget. I went overbudget at 129.99.
Its a Samsung S85. 8.2 Megapixel, 5x Zoom, ISO 1600. Its not quite what my Canon A630 was but if you merged it with the Pentax Optio M10 i8 am borrowing it takes the best of both worlds and more zoom and 1 step higher iso sensitvity. Its Smaller then the canon but bigger then the pentax. It has more features and has manual control over the pentax but no where near the canon.
The ISO 1600 performance is good enough for small prints and what id expect from the canon if it had had iso 1600. The macro performance is good too.
ISO 1600 and a 100% Crop Shot, Normal for a point and shoot does decent for a small print doesnt lose too much detail. Still bad!
The Macro shot is a 100% crop the upper part of the image was the center and is the only part in focus. Shot at 1cm. EDIT: Its the Vista Start Button BTW!
I bought the camera blind without testing it. While I should have waited a month and bought the Panasonic Lumix I was looking at the samsung suprised me and is all around okay at its price. Would have rather spent 99 on it though.

Bought my wife a similar model for Xmas. Slightly lower spec than that, I know it is only 3X optical zoom - I haven't really looked at it much, as it is "Hers", for her to take her own pics with as she can't use my SLR's!
It looks OK for what it is, though a set of Duracell AA's didn't last too long in it. She is yet to try the rechargeables I have from my old Fuji... |

My Canon A630 was a beast compared to this but its close smaller lighter and uses half as many batteries. Doesnt continous drive any faster and takes longer for the flash to recharge. I miss my flipout screen whiches closes backwards for protection. I miss my manual focus and the ability to use 52/58mm filters.
It does chew through akalines if u chose to use them. The ones that came with it were dead before i even got home. I use Duracell 2500mah rechargables and 2000mah 15 Minutes rechargables from rayovac
I was looking at the 99 dollar model 7.x MP and 3x zoom maybe its the same or close to your wifes model? I do swear after seeing the electrical contacts in this LCD that the macro performas better in certain areas then the canon. But im finding flash in auto mode tends to overpower and be finicky. My canon had problems in auto and both cameras seems to do best in program auto.
This was my A630 - //dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=563281
