I know, I know, there have been a million posts like this lately, but I'm wondering why this didn't score higher. I'm really happy with this shot and I expected it to get a fairly decent score but it kind of fell flat. I didn't get many comments on it, so I'm not really sure what I could have improved on. I'm always trying to learn, so I would love a critique on it if anyone has a moment!

I guess I do not understand why you think it did not do well. 5.75 is above average and is usually a nice solid score. This photo is a nicely done winter shot, sharp and clear, with beautiful colors. I think it wound up exactly where it should have. What score do you think it deserved?

Just my quick reaction -
When I opened it, I spent a moment looking for the bird, then thought "oh - just a feeder?" The shot itself is pretty well executed, but the choice of subject leaves one searching for a "real" subject.
Perhaps had the background been pure white, showing the isolation of the feeder more, it would have had more impact.
I don't know that this makes it any less good of a shot, but perhaps cost a little on the "instant reaction."
I'd also agree that 5.7 is no slouch score, so don't beat yourself up too much! |

Yeah, a 5.7 is better than I would have expected simply because it is a somewhat mundane subject with nothing in the image that makes it stand out (as a whole, I mean). Also, the tree branches figure prominently in contrast with the snow, thereby diminishing the subject itself a little as far as challenge relevance. My 2cents anyway. :) |

No, I guess 5.7 is fine, I just really shoot for at least 6.0 with all my shots and I was especially happy with this shot so I expected it to do a little better than 81st place. I'm not upset with my score or anything, I'm just always trying to anylize what I could have done better. |

I hope this helps
Pros
- DOF is great
- Colors are harmonious
- Ambiance is perfect
Cons
- The main subject has minimal appeal to the viewer.
- The background is confusing and distracting
- The composition is weak

Hmm... my gut reaction is (and I hate to say it) but what is the "contrast" that separates the subject from its environment? It's just not dramatic enough - I agree with the above comments. Great focus and colors, but the background really takes away |

Thank you, I really appreciate all the comments, they definitely help. I can see now that the subject probably should have been stronger. I'm still fairly new to photography, and I'm mostly self taught, so I really appreciate the feedback here to help me know if I'm getting it right or not. Thanks again! |

I gave it a 5. It's a well executed photograph, sharp and crisp. It's also a very nice birdfeeder, but it really needs a bird. It's like a beautiful lion cage without the lion. I also wasn't quite sure that the birdfeeder was isolated by contrast or more by color. This was however minor in my decision. |
