I've never used a bowl and spoon reflector (ie Beauty Dish) before, but now that I think about it, how is the light from a beauty dish different than a reflective umbrella when using a small reflector to cover the element?

Seems to me the lighting would be about the same. Anyone?

I've actually been thinking about this some lately and found a number of people who suggested that a small shoot through umbrella can give close to the same affect. I think the general goal is to get directional light that is still soft (no specular highlights). I happened onto this thread because I love the light from the big parabolic reflectors (briese focus and broncolor para) but there is no way I could afford either. Then I followed the thread of investigation down the beauty dish route.

Yeah, I was thinking that the light is also somewhat directional but soft. I think the small shoot-through may be the answer....although I still wonder if a small reflective type might be better.

You would loose that donut catch-light though.

Not all dishes are created the same. I use a 22" Mola. It's pretty directional. The reflector up front is perforated so not all the light bounces off of it.

Regardless of what dish you use, I'm sure it'll have less spill than a bounce umbrella with a reflector (plus you won't have the strobe head to work the light around).
