Just out of curiosity and maybe the possibility of selling a couple of lenses or trading them, I had B&H quote me a price for buying my 24-105 F4 L IS, which I think was around $1200ish when I bought it, and my 17-40 F4 L, which was $679 new. They offered me $850 for both LMFAO. Hell for that price I'll keep them and use them for paper weights or something. I e-mailed them my counter offer of $850 for the 24-105 and $500 for the 17-40.

Well, if you sell 2nd hand gear direct to an end user, you could probably expect around your pricing. But if B&H are taking it of your hands for an easy sale, they have to make their money off reselling it or it's not worth their while, so they are going to cut a margin, and they are also taking a business risk that your gear might have problems. I know you probably tell them it's perfect, but so does everyone else they buy from. Are you really surprised?
But, your might get your price selling direct on Ebay, or list it in the Buy/Sell forum.
Just my 2 cents. |

It's pretty much standard for a business that is reselling to have to buy cheap because they tie up the money, have to stand behind the product, and wait 'til the units sell. They certainly can't give you anything approaching retail for them.

| So you've learned your lesson? Businesses expect you to give your used stuff to them and you to pay top dollar for their stuff. Especially the used stuff. Why don't you just list here and if it doesn't sell put it on eBay? I bet you'll get a good price for them. BTW I've not had a good laugh lately. If you really emailed a counter offer, if would be nice to be able to laugh at their reply. LOL |

They are probably getting a kick out of your counter offer. Did you really think they were going to pay you retail prices for gear they have to sell and make a profit? Usually they would offer you about half of what the retail price is. Looks like their offer was higher than that.
B&H is a retailer, therefore they have to buy wholesale. If you want the retail price for your gear, as the other posters have indicated, sell here or on Ebay. |

I worked for a local camera store (Precision Camera) several years ago and I know the markup from wholesale to retail on cameras is very little. I think they offered you a good deal IMHO. |

The price they quoted you was probably less than trade price, as in the price B&H gets the stuff in for, because your equipment has been used, the box has been opened etc etc and as previously mentioned, could have been mistreated or something else.
Don't be suprised. Sell them on eBay instead. The 17-40mm will probs go for around $550. Its $620 new so I wouldn't expect miracles. |

The mark up on used gear is much higher than new gear. The risks are higher and there is no recourse for the retailer if there's something wrong with the gear. In college I worked in a local store that specialized in used photo equipment. The standard offer for any used gear was 50% of the used retail price.
That is the standard for KEH in Atlanta, The Camera Exchange in Houston, and probably any other retail store that sells used gear.
Take the 17-40, if they think they can sell it for $550, then the most you will get for trade in or direct sale to a retailer is $250 to $300. If they bought it for $500 for it their profit would be 10%. Not worth the trouble.
They make little or no margin on new hardware so that they can sell bags, memory cards, straps, etc. where their profit is higher.

| Try KEH to see what they will give you. I've got some pretty fair prices from em. |

| I've never had trouble getting the price I originally asked for on craigslist, and I've sold every item I've ever posted there. And it's free. And you can stipulate that your buyer has to pick up, so that you can sell locally to avoid shipping. |

If this surprises you, I take it you've never tried to sell a car to a used car dealer?
The only possible exceptions to these "half of retail selling price" offers for used gear come when the item being sold is rare and the retailer is actively seeking one for a customer who they have in the bag. For example, when I had a fishing tackle store there was a particular, discontinued model of big game fishing reel that was much in demand. I had a customer who wanted one, and I spent 9 months trying to locate one. When I found it, I paid top dollar for it (the seller knew what it was worth) and turned it around to my customer at a 15% markup for a tidy (and immediate) profit. But this was essentially like selling on consignment; I didn't have to tie my capital up in something that might not move for a while.

Their reply to my counter offer was simply "Sorry, we can't do that." I understand all about wholesale, retail yada yada yada. Like the OP said I did it mostly out of curiosity. I figured they were gonna offer me about half or less of what they had them listed for new. I already knew about what they would sell it for.
