As some of you know, I've been renting the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens over the course of the past month or so. Well, I finally broke down and bought one Sunday (along with the EW-83E hood). I can't wait to go out and start shooting with my very own ultra wide lens--especially now that the current challenge is "Rivers and Streams". This should be a good lens for that challenge--not that there are many rivers and streams in the OC, but I'll have to make-do. :-(
At any rate, here is what the lens looks like, as well as some photos that were taken with the 10-22 (the rented one, not my new one)...

| Enjoy the new lens! It's a great bit of kit, so what took you so long to charge it to the credit card? :-) |

LOL! A few delays...Samy's was out of stock at their local brick-n-mortar location close to me...Christmas gift money was still arriving in the mail...all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, etc.
My goal was to buy it before the Canon rebates expire next week--so I met that goal! ;-)

I wish. :-(
Probably won't get up there until spring or summer. I will be in the Pacific Northwest in a few weeks (Seattle area). I plan on taking a couple of days to drive around the plush winter forests and capture some landscapes. Hear that, Jason ( DrAchoo), I'm going to be invading your neck of the woods! Now where's that "Evergreen" or "Waterfall" challenge? LOL!
In the meantime, it's beach and pier scenes for me. :-)

Newport Beach has a large estuary; at the right time of tide it's quite riverine...

| I bought the same lens right near the end of December. It takes a little getting used to, but so far I'm loving it! A must have for the kit IMO. |

Yes. It's referred to here as "The Back Bay". I shot a creek scene yesterday at the O'Neill Regional Park in Trabuco Canyon and drove by the Back Bay in Newport on the way home. The idea did cross my mind. I'll have to go back on a reconnaissance mission this afternoon.
I forget...you lived out here for a while, didn't you?

Hah! I'm a 4th-generation, native San Diegan, and my mother-in-law lived on the Back Bay. So yeah, I have a lot of familiarity with the area. Plus I used to race sailboats pretty much full-time, and we sailed out of Newport a lot. I moved to Cape Cod when I retired; the weather's a LOT more photographically interesting here :-)

I hear ya. The sky is always cloudless and blue, not too appealing to photographers. :-(
Hey, I'm off to go check out the Back Bay now...

Here's what my reconnaissance mission turned up...most access to the narrower parts of Back Bay are built up (buildings, houses). I wanted narrow portions so that it actually could pass as a river or stream. Other areas were straight cliffs, but I did find an area that looked promising. I'll get back there in the next couple of days. |

It's a fun lens!
Not sure you'll need the hood - I can't get mine to flare at any angle with any light. It's just amazing in that regard.

Some of us work and travel, so a kayak ride during the week would be a rare treat. On the weekends, it's like bumper cars out there on the water. :-(

Thank, Chris.
I mainly bought it for protecting the front glass, as I do all my lenses. Although this hood is so stubby, hopefully it'll offer at least some protection. |

| Have fun Les!! While we have an abundance of rivers and streams around here, it will be interesting to find them under all the snow!!! If I can get out between storms, I might be able to shoot something :). 49 inches of new snow at Wolf Creek Pass in the last couple of days.... The skiing is out of this world right now. I'm looking for a "white" challenge these days :D. |

I too usually buy the hoods too, but the 10-22 is the one I don't have a hood for cause I don't see the need. Protection is a valid point, but for weddings I'm using a belt system and no hoods so I've learned to be cautious. For the 17-55 I bought a $10 ebay hood from hongkong instead of canon's $40+ hood. It's just about as nice.

Here's a lens hood for the 10-22 for only US$10.50 (shipping included).
