OK - This goes some way in proving that the "Compatibility" tables published by the sellers of these are somewhat dubious.

Compatible models:

Canon SpeedLite 580EX II, 580EX, 540EZ, 520EZ, 430EX, 430EZ, 420EX, 420EZ, 380EX;
Nikon SpeedLite SB-800, SB-600, SB-28, SB-27, SB-26, SB-25, SB-24;
Olympus FL-50, FL36; Pentax AF-540 FGZ, AF-360 FGZ, AF-400 FT, AF-240 FT;
Sigma EF-500 DG Super, EF-500 DG ST, EF-430;
Sunpak Auto 2000DZ, 622 Pro, 433AF, 433D, 383, 355AFm 344D, 333D;
Vivitar 285HV (Older Vivitar 285/283 works only with PC sync);
Other flash models with a trigger voltage of 12V or lower;

From THIS Ebay Auction Ad.

I have highlighted the Sigma EF-500 DG ST as it is listed as compatible, however, I know for a fact that it is not, as I have one and it won't fire.

Does anyone else actually have a 380EX that works with these that you know of?

Unfortunately no... but right now my problem isn't wireless, it's basic functionality.

I've been trying for hours now and I'm chasing my tail. With the flash on the camera it all appears to work fine until you look at the output and there's zero flash captured at all and I just don't get it.

I've been through every setting I can find to make sure there's nothing accidentally set, and there doesn't seem to be anything. Flash exposure compensation set at 0, have tried it with 3 different metering modes, every different exposure/aperture priority from v. slow to quick.

This might mean a new flash which I really don't want to have to do right now (plus I want it fast for the Time Lapse challenge).

Has anyone else ever heard of this weird problem? Is it a sign of a dying flash or incompetent user?!

Can you borrow a flash from a friend or something to eliminate Camera settings/fault?

I'm just about to head into town to the big Jessops on New Oxford Street to try to diagnose the problem with either another 30D and/or 380EX. Will report back here what happens just in case it is the weirdest fault of all time and not me :)

EDIT: Back from town...went to Jacobs (prefer them to Jessops)...tried old 380EX on another 30D...no joy...tried new 430EX on my 30D...success. I now own a new 430EX...unexpected xmas present to myself and VISA...and have just put my studio lighting aspirations back a few months...

And finally....the wireless trigger stuff works perfectly with the 430EX.

Am putting this in here for the benefit of anyone who comes up with the same weirdness in the future, and might be searching these forums.

The bottom line is that if your flash all of a sudden isn't synching properly but appears to function otherwise fine, it's finished and it's time to buy another. If anyone comes up with a fix/solution, please please let me know.

Thanks for all the help.
