These are two pics I took at the college game last night. Keep in mind these are with no flash. They are also RAW files that I transfered into JPEG. How do you think I did with lighting and witch do you like better the original or the crop.
Thanks, Jeremy |

The stop action is nice and the lighting seems good IMO. I personally like the first one without the crop. Including the defender seems to add more action to the shot and draw you in more. In the crop, my eyes bounce first to the player and then to the crowd, where I immediately notice the blur. JMHO. :) |

The aspect ratio on the crop looks different? The guy looks shorter and wider.
How did you light them? Surprisingly bright for no flash. I thought most games were fairly dim.

Thanks for the replies. I am shooting with a Nikon D80 and a 50mm 1.8 lens. I shot at 1250 2.8 and 500 shutter speed. You are not allowed to use any sort of flash in this gym, only the so called tv lights they cut on for every game. By the way I converted both of these images from raw files. I am just now learning the conversion process so if any of you have any pointers you would like to share they would be appreciated. Also how much sharpening do you guys use. I tend to leave it at the default and play with the luninance smoother more.
Thanks, Jeremy |

I think the first image is much stronger for two reasons. First, including the defender adds some context and emotion in his response. Second, the two players are nicely balanced in the image, and the look on the defender drives you to the guy in the air. Centering just the guy in the air leaves me wandering around. Also, since in the first one the jumping guy is smaller, it's quicker for me to absorb the whole subject. Enormous detail on him isn't where I get impact in that shot.

Needs a bit more contrast. |
