In Photoshop CS3, let's say I have two layers, each with a Smart Object (SO) of the same landscape image, but exposed differently in ACR when converting from RAW. One SO is converted to properly display the land, the other SO converted to properly expose the sky. Let's say the sky SO is the top layer. I add a layer mask to mask out the land (which now shows the properly exposed land from the lower layer).

To make that transition from sky to land appear much smoother, I want to apply a linear gradient to create a fade between the two SOs. Is this legal under the Advanced Editing ruleset?

Thanks, Nathan.

With all due respect, I would like some sort of "official" reply from an SC. ;-)

Its perfectly legal in advanced, but not in basic.
I've used it many times.

What you are accomplishing is HDR editing -- it's legal in Advanced, but not basic. Under the newest version of the rules, you can also do the same with two separate exposures of the same shot, rather than relying on the two RAW conversions.

Thanks Paul.

Yes, I do quite a bit of HDR merges, but really only started using gradients to smooth transitions like in the particular example I gave. It works really well--that's why I wanted to make sure it was legal in Advanced.

Thanks!
